Hi everyone, I'm totally new to the FJ world and just picked up a 74 cruiser. I'm pretty sure it has a lift but not sure how much and I was wondering if anyone can help me figure how much of a lift I have on my truck. Thanks!

It looks old school.

BTW, you have an FJ40, not an FJ. The FJ is the nickname for the FJ Cruiser. Totally different animal.

A lot. How does it drive? Have you tried it with front drive shaft engaged yet?

Drives a bit rough right now but gonna try to lower it back down to around stock height. Hopefully, it'll sort that issue out. What would be the best route to do that?

You would need to separate springs from axles, basically take suspension apart, to move springs under axles-the way they come from the factory. Rough ride is par for the course with any FJ40, stock suspension included. If it steers straight as is and driveshafts don't bind/vibrate then I'd consider leaving it alone. Maybe post up a photo of your front suspension and steering setup. If the steering has been modified for the spring over axle then going back to stock height may not be ideal, I don't know.

Just putting the springs under that axles may not work. It has a shackle reversal and the front shackle hanger is through the frame. Hard to tell what the steering setup is, but it's not stock.

Do some research on shackle reversal, spring over axle and stock suspension to learn about what you have and what you are considering doing.

New mild lift springs. Swap back to SUA (Spring Under Axle). Depending on how much has been modified, it could be difficult... but certainly not impossible.

I’ve never wanted SOA, but I’d think long and hard about removing it if it’s done half decent. Carefully plan what you want in the end. Many want 33s with a mild lift... which would cost you more if you first went back to stock and then decided you wanted a 2-4” lift. If that was the case you might want to lower your SOA to 4” and fix anything poorly done... it’d ride better than a SUA lift.

I appreciate all the help and advice guys. I'll try to snap a picture of the front suspension tomorrow morning before work but the car does have power steering if that helps. In the end, I don't mind the ride because it won't be my daily driver but I wanted to lower it a bit so my family could get in and out of it a little easier.
