I'm in the process of rebuilding my front axle and this is the CV from the driver's side. The bearings looked fine. Note the wear in the inside of the birf; the areas that looks polished vs. those that don't, similar wear in the cage. Note the wear on the fins of the star, each of the fins has about the same amount of grooving. Also noticed some odd heated areas on face of birf and on star.

BTW, this is the left birfield pending re-grease and install on the right side.

I believe what you are referring to as the unpolished areas are normal machining marks in areas that have nothing do with wear. The wear areas are the groves within the polished areas. The odd heated areas are also normal as this is where the metal has been heat treated to increase the hardness during manufacturing.

Fuzzy, that wear looks normal, in fact it's got lots of miles left in it, if it were mine, I'd have no problem putting that joint back together, and reinstalling it.

Thanks, I don't really have the budget for replacements at this time, especially with having to fix all the crap the prior owner half-assed (finishing nails for cotter pins as an example of a cheap soon-to-be repair).
