Hi.. I'm new to the forum and I have a question that I hope someone could enlighthen me with. I have a HZJ80 with Australia GX spec. I've custom turbo it with Garrett custom turbo running 23psi of boost with intercooler. Fuel pump is custom built and calibrated with the needed amount of diesel. My question is can my 1HZ handle 30psi with stock internals? If it goes I might want to consider getting the engine built from bottom up with custom piston and rod.

wou Nick .. I can't answer for sure your question but definately interested in how your 1HZ perform with that much boost .. even 23PSI I though are bunch of boost for any high compresion engine ..

More than if the engine can handle .. I would think how long it can handle ..

what tapages sig says is true.

I hear guys running 15 psi with a water to air intercooler and they say they are complete rocket ships. I wouldn't go more than that...... thats a bit overkill too. but dame would it be FUN.

It's not a question of how much boost it can handle, there are no magic numbers. If you increase your boost you will decrease your engine life.

Lolx.. well to be honest it does take off like a rocket.. ;) I custom built the turbo with garrett journal bearing with compressor 56 trim running 23psi. The response of the engine is so good even gas powered car difficult to stay behind during 80kph to 130kph pull. Full boost can be achieved by 1800rpm The engine is begging for more but the 5th gear is too short.. Now after driving it turbo for about 30k km it doesnt really make u feel being enough. Feel like taking it to the 30isshh.. The engine itself is currently clocked at 230k km. So if it goes then i'll get the engine built with stronger internals with factory specs. I'll post some of my idle video on..

check out that intercooler job! COOL!

Thanks! We welded a 2.5" inlet for the manifold and port the manifold for the increase airflow. The stock inlet has a divider splitting the air equal to the runners and we had to machine out that barrier and close the inlet with a aluminium plate 1" and mimic the stock throttle cable bolt position. I try to remain everything in stock position as I could because I like things to be in stock looking.

How did you get enough fuel to produce 23psi boost?

There is a guy on the outerlimits board running 24psi with a modified pump and large turbo, he is turning 5-6000 rpm and the power is nuts. I couldn't imagine 30 psi! I run 15psi with stock pump and water/air intercooler and love it, I just don't need 24psi at this time:)

Very cool.

So there has been people around that is doing it. But honestly speaking 5-6000rpm is way over the line.. Diesel engine is not meant for those kind of rpm and many things can go wrong with those kind of rpm in diesel.. i know people have been putting huge turbo and big amount of boost making big power on 1FZ-FE but never heard anyone yet doing on 1HZ or 1HD.. Was the guy on outerlimits board running 1HZ as well..??

Getting the right amount of diesel into the engine with the custom turbo you need to test the IP on a IP simulator.. Put the right amount of rpm and boost that you want to achieve and calibrate the boost compensator as well as the all the bits and pieces inside the IP.. There are just so many ways u can increase the injection of diesel to suit your application.. U can do all sorts of modification to the IP to increase the diesel injection by changing the parts inside and calibrate accordingly to your engine..

I will love to see those 30 PSI at 3000 rpm that would be sweet .. I'm not that brave to do in my engine but would like to see it .. :D

 hmm.. It would be interesting to know what kind of power it makes at 30psi.. but before i get there will try do it in 2psi at a time until i reach 30issh.. So far the engine holds up pretty well in terms of temperature and all.. So i'll keep u guys posted once I got there.. I dont have a dyno nearby and the closes one is about 150km away.. I'll do a dyno when i get the time to go on a trip down to the shop.. it would be interesting to know what is the power level at 23psi and 30psi..

But anyway for the current power level when i were using a stock size tyre it would smoke the tyre easily in 2nd.. now i'm running 35s and sometimes if u gas at it hard during a take off at turns it breaks the traction a bit too.. But I'm afraid of doing it too much and stressing to the drivetrain..

your nutz but that is okay, it is the nutz that make the world go round.

i have to say, i love the intercooler install. so clean, so simple.
NICE.

ditto on the intercooler/intake manifold set-up. Do you have picts of the manifold before you installed it? Or even on the truck?

he's got over 30,000 kms on it since I last talked to him lasty year - works like a charm, here it is in action:

Yes the guy on outerlimits is running a 1HZ. I don't understand it either.

So you're running bigger pump elements and a boost controller? Essentially a complete custom built pump or was it from a 1HD-FT?

I've talked to a bunch of comp guys with 1hz's, they run the stock pump but modify it and the injectors, I'll see if I can find the info.
