How many miles has your 3B done?

Just passed 500 000k's 2 weeks ago. Running solid. No oil leaking or burning.
Its my adventure rig. In the last 8 months I have put over 10 000 k's on it. The vast majority of those running on Veggie oil.
Oil pressure sits lower than I'd like... looking into a rebuild in the future.

369,000 on my '85 BJ70. No turbo.
No real problems. New water pump around 250,000, alternator around the same time.
I'm hopeful the 13B-T in my B74 is anywhere near as reliable over the long haul.

over the decades i have seen 3Bs running strong at 500,000 and others dead at 150,000. the highest "one owner" BJ60 i have seen is 765,000. the engine got retired but the yellow body is still in use today.

the lowest was 156,000 but that was pure bush beating and abuse and neglect. not the fault of the engine.

Well, I've had my 1984 BJ60 since virtually new, it was only 11 months old when I got it from the dealer, I let the first owner eat the depreciation .
And, being a retentive SOB, I have all the maintenance and fuel records (and costs) since then.

there you go. i know of a couple of 'one owner' BJ60 (HJ60) that are turning 500,000.
me, i couldn't keep a vehicle that long. the 3B is a wickedly reliable engine as long as you maintain it.
my only 3B i have now has 21,000 original km on it. 1987 ragtop 70. so i guess it has a bit of life ahead of it yet.

I agree Crushers, they're an industrial engine, way overbuilt, so that they can last for ages with only basic maintenance, but it needs to be carried out as and when the Toyota Factory Maintenance Procedures manual dictates (that's why they wrote the book...).
Of course it is all extremely low-tech so that the shade tree luddite wrenchers in rural Uzbekistan (or even more remote places) can successfully do it!
3B's, the personification of the K.I.S.S. principle. (or maybe the official engine of the K.I.S.S. army...)(Hmmm, sorry....)

The guy who owns the 1.3 mil kms truck bought it in about 1991, it had just somewhere over 100,000 kms on it - I worked on it in 1992 -put a wilson switch in it. He is a travelling salesman and he drives many kms every day - many, many. He bought another bj60 in about 1993 and parked it until the body gave on the 1.3mill kms truck - now he is driving the other one.

So, unless the 1.3 mill kms engine had an engine job before he got it there has never been an overhaul on it.

1.3 mil km at 10k/l = 130,000 liters of fuel. = (say just for fun) $115,000

1.3 mil km with oil changes every 5000 km = 260 oil changes at $75 per = $19,500

1.3 mil km with a new set of tires every 60K = 21 sets of tires at $500 per = $10,500

1,3 mil km seat time at 90 k/h = 14,444 hrs sitting in the drivers seat / 6 hours per day =2407 days / 5 days a week = 481 weeks / 48 weeks working a year = 10 years.

damn, that is a lot of money and "seat" time. WOW!

i wonder if he has to have the 3B running to sleep at night like the big rig boys sometimes do...

Mine is an '84 BJ60 that I bought off what I know as the second owner. His name is Chris and he's from Armstong BC, he bought from Kelowna Toyota in the late ninety's. It was a trade in from a dentist in Salmon Arm BC. The original owners card and info is still in the glovebox right now. Chris did oil changes, glow plugs and a waterpump. I bought it at 409,000km in spring of 2007 and now it has 504,000kms, but I have been running 255/85x16s so I guess it actually has a few more. I turbo'd it at 433,000kms and it runs great to this day. Front and rear seals are pooched though, and the lifter cover is seeping. It's actually sitting in Revelstoke now, and I'm going to pull the motor and re-seal everything this winter. I've had it to Inuvik, Alaska, all of Alberta and BC pretty much and Washington and Idaho.

Just think if the 3Bs came with something to build up oil presure before you start it. None of them would need rebuilding unless it was run on low or no oil and the EGTs went past 1300F on a daily basis.

Cominco, now Teck had BJ42s up at Polaris in the NWT running 24hous a day

Not being one who gets easily bored with my truck I have had my '82 BJ60 since '88 or '89 when it had 90,000kms on it. I dropped a pre-cup on that engine in the late '90's and threw in a "wrecker" 3B with what I was told was similar kms (about 260,000kms at that time). I did a high nickel head at about 300,000kms since another 3B of mine had a bad head (I also turbocharged it at that time) . I'm now at 575,000kms on that "wrecker" engine. The last 150,000kms have been in Central America which is not nice to vehicles. In the last 6 months that truck has driven from Central America to Canada 1 1/2 times and towed my FJ45LV from Guatemala City to San Jose, Costa Rica. It may end up in Africa in the next year or so if I move over there! I have no plans to sell it.

As for rebuilding, I rebuilt one for my FJ55 when it had about 460,000kms on the clock. I had that engine only for a short time and it had a lot of blow by which is why I rebuilt it. It was in an '84 BJ60 which I had for about 3 years. When I pulled that engine for rebuilding I replaced it with my original engine that had dropped a precup back in the '90's. All I did to the original engine was swap out the liner and piston and the necessary new gaskets and seals to do that work, no machining or work other than that! That engine ran in my daily driver till I sold it over a year later.

Every 3B I have torn down I have checked for bearing clearances and all were within specifications so the only one to get new bearings was the one currently in my FJ55.

The rebuilt engine in the FJ55 has about 20,000 miles on it. I recently drove it too from Guatemala to Central America.

Do you really believe a 1HZ is just as reliable as an old slow ass 3B?

cause honestly I kinda have my doubts...

Timing Belts? are added to the service intervals. Not an issue because they do get serviced . The in-line injector pumps last way longer than the radial ones ie 3B vs 1HZor 1PZ
P.S. Remember these MINE MOTORS get serviced whether they need it or not! How do I know because I am involved in MINING in one way or another. Sorry for the HI-Jack

I am fortunate, being one of the lucky few who knows the full history of my rig. My folks bought the '82 BJ60 in June of that year. My Mom drove it back and forth to work (all of 10 kms round trip) for the majority of their ownership. After ten years, and 3 exhaust systems, I bought it from them as my first vehicle and used it as a DD up until about five years ago. Now it sits with just over 300,000 kms on it, waiting for some body work, maybe a refresh (and turbo?)...just in time for my kids to use it.

It's strange, no matter how many other vehicles I drive, including my 80, I still think the 60 is my favourite ride!

I've had a bunch of high mileage ones but nothing well documented.

My BJ70 has about 550,000km but has had the engine swapped at some time. I had a couple parts rigs with ODOs over 700,000 km. A guy used to come by my shop with a BJ60 that he witnessed roll over a million. It was showing 30,000km when I saw it.

You really could rebuild them ad nauseum and go forever or until something catastrophic happens. I picked up an engine one time that threw a rod and had nearly no salvageable parts. The rod came through the block and hit the injector pump, blowing a hole through it and breaking the oil pump and timing cover. The piston bent a valve and damaged the head. I think I kept the rocker cover and put the rest in the metal bin.
