Hi everyone, I’m pretty new here, so excuse the basic question — but after spending an hour and a half on the forum, I still couldn’t find a clear answer.

I’m planning to switch to 17” wheels and I’m wondering:
What’s the best tire and wheel configuration for R17s that would allow me to avoid trimming the fender?

If that’s not possible,

what’s the largest tire size I can safely run on the stock R18 wheels without rubbing or trimming?

Thanks in advance!

Depending on tires, which does vary on manufacturer, 265/70/17 seems to be the sweet spot. I only had issues with the rear running board bolt head when I went to that size. A low profile bolt, rivet, or removal altogether solves that problem.

What Clint said. I went with TRD Pro wheels which are 7" wide and 4mm offset. And Wildpeak AT3W tires.

The important question at least to me when doing this was what is the largest size tire that can fit in the stock spare location. It is reported as 31.6” however as Clint said diameter can vary even among the same brand. The AT3W Wildpeak fits but is a struggle with the factory tow hitch installed. Some have reported that the new AT4W does not fit because it is slightly larger. It is individual tire dependent.

I took care of the rubbing side step bolt by removing them and installing Expo One sliders

@Kyrylo25 trimming and or removing the running boards are the best option.

Shamefully I still have the factory wheel with a street tire as my spare. I think I'm gonna remove the factory hitch since I won't tow. Not sure 100% if that's the direction I'll go.

check out this vid from tinker's adventure on how to fit larger wheels. It's a combo of factors.

It's sounds like you may also want to consider what is the largest tire that'll fit in your stock spare tire location in the back.
From what I've read on this forum (I run 35" tires), a 32" tire (you can figure out the metric sizes here: Tire Size Calculator - https://tiresize.com/calculator/ ) is about the largest one can fit in the stock spare location, and that's wedging it in.
On that note, that also means that you can easily mount that size tire on any 17" rim with 0 (zero) offset and not have any rubbing, although you may want a small, maybe 1"- 1.5" suspension lift to give a wee bit more space in the wheel wells, ground clearance and suspension travel.
Anyone with experience on this, please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm typing this off memory of what I remember reading.

I have a 32" mounted to my old 18" OEM wheel in my spare tire location. I used my old 275/65/18 Nitto terra grappler G2 as the spare. When new, they were 32.09" according to discount tire. Since they have 50k miles on them, they have worn down enough to fit in the spare location.

I am concerned about the space around the arch, what kind of wheel can I fit there? Can you give me the parameters? 275/70 r17 - does it require any modification for installation?

which one bolt gave you the problem ?

I've got a post about it here: Builds - Grizzly Clint's 2010 GX460 build - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/grizzly-clints-2010-gx460-build.1236381/post-15583822. Everyone seems to have an issue with this same bolt...

I ended up using rivets but looking back I'd probably try and find a thicker screw with a flat head on it. So far the rivet has held together but it is only a matter of time I think before my off roading will pop it out.

All you've mentioned is your rim size, but what is the offset of your rims? That makes a big difference in a tire rubs or not.

I would like to get trd pro rims, personally I don’t know the offset, this style r17

Even a 31.6" tire may not fit into the spare tire well. I couldn't get my 265/70r17 Rubitreks on 8" rims to fit. KDSS spacers made enough room to get it in.

265/70R17 AT tires vary from 31.6" to 31.2". Tire rack lists diameters and tread widths of mounted and inflated tires.
The tread width and wheel offset will make a big difference in how much rub you get. The genuine TRD wheels have a low offset. The replicas are often 8" instead of 7" and have more offset. 8" is probably better for a 265 width tire to get all the tread on the ground but narrower tires are less likely to pop the bead when aired down.

I have 265/70R17 Falken AT4W's and I can only drop or raise the spare easily when I've got the rear air suspension in "Low". "Normal" is a tight fit, "High" is a no go, so KDSS spacers—especially with a lift—make total sense for spare tire fitment.

I don’t care about the spare tire

Do I need to cut anything for 265/70 r17?
