How do you "stake" something?

While rebuilding my engine and now my power steering gear box the FSM sometimes says to "stake" a bolt or washer in place. What does this mean and how do I do it? Do I need a special tool?

Thanks,

Matt

'Stakeing' varies depending on application.

For example, staking the axle bearing nuts involves a 'washer with wings' and a wing is bent over one nut - a different wing bent over the other nut.

Some bolts / studs ( output shaft on xfer case, as another example) have a relief cut along it's end length, the nut has a shoulder. After the nut is tightened, using a chisel, the shoulder over the relief is wacked: the 'dented' shoulder is is in the relief & the nut won't back out...

I was once told that you can also drill a small hole through a nut and run a wire that you tie off nearby, which prevent the nut from turning out. Never tried it.

Or you could drill a hole in a (large) bolt/stud and run a cotter pin through it near the nut. That would keep the nut there too.
