Is there a reason you don't believe the specified tank is installed.

The OEM tank is a splash over 25 gallons. The light comes on when there is about 5 gallons left. I do not know if the pump will suck it dry, I haven't wanted to find out. The most I have put in is just over 23 gallons.

I just assumed that the light would come if there was only a gallon or two left in the tank. All my previous cars were like that, so I just assumed the same would be true for the FJ80.

I think I'll take the earlier advice and just fill up whenever the light comes on (~20 gal. used)

It is likely an issue of available "range" as opposed to the actual quantity of fuel remaining in the tank. A Corolla goes a helluva lot farther on 5 gallons than a Cruiser does.

I had it in my head that it's around 50 miles or so before you need to get out and push...:D(no matter what the car is)

Last fill up I went almost 70 miles from when the light first turned on. I was really sweating those last 10-15 miles. I was in the middle of no where and had to get to my favorite gas station!! :D Curse from my mother...drive 30 miles to save 2cents on gas...Anyway it took 24.XXXX gallons. That is the closest I will take it...

yup, light comes on around 20 per pump filling.

Is there an easy way (read plug) to drain the tank?

Install a 40 gallon aux. and then you won't have to worry about it........ :flipoff2:

Premium rigs

Most "premium" vehicles build in the generous "early, early warning until empty gas tank" feature. Land Cruiser is such a vehicle. What vehicle manufacturer wants to "taint" their premium brand with running out of gas without a sufficient warning?

Yes, the tank has a drain plug. So does the OEM OZ sub-tank.

I would think ALL manufactures would want to give sufficient warning. ;)

FWIW, I have seen the scary orange low fuel indicator light up early, when only maybe 17-18 gallons are gone (in my estimation), when driving down a steep hill. I guess the fuel sloshes forward, and the sensor is at the back of the tank, because the light would turn off once I was level or heading uphill.
