How do I patch a hole in the chimmany?

Hey everyone,
Since the hot water heater is no longer used in my house, we removed it. Now the hole for the hot water heater exhaust needs to be filled in. How should I do it? I know that I can't just dump cement into the hole, because it would just fall in. So what should I use, screen, etc?

No the hole is in the chimmany itself down in the basement, in the vertical span going to the roof.

Get a clean out plug the size of your hole and stick it in. If your looking to seal the chimney I'd cap it at the roof and brick up the hole.

This is a brick chimney with a small round hole where the water heater exaust tapped it? Is the chimney still used by a fireplace or other appliance ?

Trim a fireplace brick to fit or chisel out the cut bricks and reinstall with mortar. If you are careful they won't fall down inside.

YES exactly it is a brick chimney with a small round hole, that was for the water heater exhaust. And yes it is used for the boiler still.

Measure the size of the hole and head to Lowes or home depot for a cap insert. There are standard size caps that will fit right in there. You can fill the cracks around the cap with fiberglass insulation (wear gloves), or spray foam. Not a big deal...
