How bad, really, are NAPA/O'Reilly/etc. calipers? (1 Viewer)

So, I'm gearing up to overhaul my rear brakes (getting all new hardware, wheel cylinders, shoes, and gonna get the drums turned somewhere locally), but I also want to freshen up the fronts while I'm at it. New pads are easy, but I'm not sure what to do about the calipers.

First off, I don't want to drop >$500 on a set of brand new OEMs.

I also don't want to rebuild mine myself if I can avoid it, but I will if the other options are bad enough.

So, the question is, what's the least labor-intensive solution to 'baselining' my front brakes that's appreciably cheaper than swapping them with brand new OEMs? Are the $48 reman'd ones NAPA sells really not worthwhile? Or are they just less of a sure thing than the $250+ brand new OEMs? Are 'toyota remans' for ~$90 a piece actually going to be better than the NAPA ones, or just less likely to have been assembled wrong at the factory?

The NAPA ones are Cardone, which are a good option, in my experience. They have a limited lifetime warranty, so you can address it with NAPA if you have issues. They do not come with new mounting bolts, so you would probably want to source new ones of those. I say go for it....but I'm the wild child that used non-OE accessory/fan belts (Goodyear Gatorback - gasp!)

Just got one oreilly one and one autozone one a few months ago when I installed stainless brake lines. They’re awesome!
In all actuality, calipers are very simple in function and aren’t worth overpaying for if you’re going for oe-spec performance! Get whatever makes sense for you. I went with AZ and oreilly because they were what I could get locally that same day.

Good pads are more important to stopping than the calipers. I run aftermarket calipers with OEM or Hawk pads. The rust in New England destroys calipers and disks pretty fast. For me, the longevity of OEM calipers is not an advantage. Someone in AZ or CA may have different priorities.

The OReilly rebuilt calipers are rebuilt by Cardone also. Nobody buys brand new Toyota calipers- or at least they shouldn't. Rebuilding calipers isn't brain surgery and Cardone is probably the largest automotive rebuilder in the USA. I had Cardone rebuilt calipers on my cruiser. They worked fine with no issue

Why not go OEM? I replaced the front calipers with OEM rebuilt ones. Order them from your local Toyota dealer’s on line website for the best price. As opposed to the “ brick and mortar “ over the counter price. Then pick them up at the dealer instead of paying shipping. The calipers I exchanged ( 60.00 ea core charge ) were 52.00ea

This. I had this romantic idea of rebuilding my original calipers with an OEM seal kit, OEM this n that, etc...to keep it "all original".

F that. Got Toyo remans from dealer with online pricing, looked perfect out of the box, been great for a few years.

So, are Toyo remans better than Oreilly/AZ Cardone remans.....not sure, who really knows? Is it possible they are rebuilt in the same place?...hmmm. Don't know, but I like that the Toyota remans come in a Mr. T box and aren't that much more $.

Iv'e always had good luck with Napa brake parts. The castings I got recently had Teq stamp barely legible. They are reman OEM castings. I would have rebuilt mine, but I had a couple of stuck pistons due to blown out dust seals. The zinc coating would look nice, but I've never had a chunk of cast iron rust away beyond use. It's quite possible that Toyota has more strict QC for reman parts? I dunno. But my warranty is good at any Napa anywhere. Just MHO on Napa brake parts.

And the hardware kit I got from Cruiser Outfitters was perfect.
