Hi guys ive finnaly got an account here instead of just lurking..

I just got a jdm bj73(150k kms) yesterday, I checked most of the truck out pretty thoroughly, But when I got home yesterday I found something to me that seemed like be a big uhoh to me..

filter light: i was told that he replaced the filters and the light stayed on and that it has been on for a while.. so i assumed it was some /vaccum problem..

I research when i got home to find out that the fuel filter is actually connected to that light, So i checked the water separator, And there was tons of water that came out!

The scary part is later that day I went to fill up with diesel and there was no gas cap..

I live in one of the rainiest parts of the country.. how bad could this be...
Opinions welcomed

Location... which country is it that you're in that's rainy??

Gas caps are kind of important. If anything, to keep water out.

The water separator should be checked regularly - esp. if you have an area that sells poor quality fuel.

vancouver island as well..

yeah i know this stuff is important to do, I guess it doesnt make to much of difference anymore, I already bought it.
Im just wondering what kind of damage could have been done.. Im kinda annoyed that the previous didnt problem solve the light or tell me about something as important as the gas cap missing

one interesting thing about this bj73 is that it has the fuel filter and separator that is from a 1hz on it, instead of the smaller one that was supposed to be on the 3b

I will call the owner tonight and see if I can get more specific times
(when light 1st came one)
(has he ever drained the filter before)
(how long has gas cap been missing)
(and when the last fill up was)

1. I would be draining the tank completely and rinsing it out.
2. I would be changing the diesel filter.
3. I would be taking the filter out of the lifter pump and cleaning it also and the elbow joint.
4. I would be checking the inside of the tank for rust flakes when I rinse it out.

Good luck.

bad news.... Called previous owner... been about 3 years!!! since fuel cap has been missing and the fuel filter light has been on for a long time too... tracked down the part number and toyota is sending me a cap tomorrow..

He also didnt know about the fuelfilter drain.... so it has never been drained..

Ive changed the fuel filter..
Thanks for the suggestions Cicak,I dont have a garage and winter is approaching

I feel quite saddened now and dont want to deal with a stupid problem like this..

I guess this could be a testament to the relability of the 3B

Would you call the owner back and see if he would take it back and he wins a free oil change and tank of gas out of the whole thing. Ive only put maybe 200km on it and it has been less than 48hours..
Or is the deal I got good enought to merrit the whole water thing.

right hand drive
minor rust bubble on both front fenders, Minor rust on rocker panels near door. small dent on one fender
cracked windshield
aftermarket exhaust ( i would prefer stock)
5spd
good tires
3b
155k kms,
pto winch
has been offroaded,

7300 canadian.. opinions please so maybe I could call him back?
Thanks guys..

if you can get him to take it back then that would be the best idea...
if not then do prevntive maintenence and keep an eye on it...

not a smoking deal in my mind.

I would assume more than a handful of land cruisers out there have sat with a full fuel water separator for a while... If she has good compression, I'd purge the system put in a new filter, drain the separator, put on your gas cap and giver!

This all being said, it's still a piss off...

The sale was final..

So my best bet would be to

1) drain the tank( to check for rust just check how the fuel looks on it way out) I really dont want to drop the tank... Is there a way to look inside without having to do that (ie removable panel from inside the vehicle)

2) I already changed the filter

3) I am not sure of where the lift pump is ( is part of the filter assembly) or under body somewhere.

what a stressfull day..
cant believe it no fuel cap for 3 years....
Thanks Guys,

you can complain to the BCMVA and they can put pressure on the seller to buy it back.

cant find a BCMVA did you mean these guys The Motor Vehicle Sales Authority of British Columbia

I dont even know if I want to take it that far... I hate conflict... I could take this as a big life lesson. Go over everything with a fine tooth comb!

The truck runs good and this cant be worse than hydrolocking the engine right?
karma must not exist! when I sell a vehicle I nit pick my own vehicle so much that it scares the average buyer away.

Thanks for the helpfull replies Wayne

and,
that is why so many people keep ripping others off ... they count on the buyers not to want conflict.

anyway, your karma is fine. you can go though life with your head held high, not like the individuals that sell s*** and then have to hide their "bottom feeder" personalities behind a facade of "buyer beware".

chances are you will be fine, purge the tank, steam it and clean the rest of the system. keep an eye on the injectors since they are sensitive to water contamination.

welcome to the club

cheers

do those trucks have a drain made into the fuel tank...if so should be rather easy to drain fuel out or most of it and go from there, and poteially drop the tank for inspection. IF it runs good I would clean the tank, swap out the fuel filter a few times between a few thousand miles and just go on with other checks.

I started the truck up after the fuel filter change over, It took alot of turns of the idle nob to make it run smooth again, It nearly sounds like a different engine.

This is what came out of the filter during the change, about 250ml of gunk. ( this is after the water draining).

i would be draining that filter every few hundred km for a while ...
just to be on the safe side.
