I'm technically the 3rd owner, but the 2nd owner was my dad so it is a family vehicle. We got the truck in 1996 with 32k. Over the 4-5 years I have had a lot of end of service life maintenance items done with the intent on never selling it, but plans change. It was used for daily driving and family hauling for many years, but now is mostly just weekend stuff like hauling my motorcycles or going to the hardware store since I have a commuter box to daily with. It has been garaged for the vast majority of its life minus when I was in college in early 2000s. It has never left me stranded at home or on the road, never failed to start and move, never seen a trailer, etc.
Here is what has been done in the last approx 5 yrs & 50k miles in addition to regular 5k oil changes and other normal wear items:
1yr old Odyssey battery
spark plugs and wires
distributor
alternator
radiator
belts
power steering pump
fuel injectors cleaned
front drive shaft u-joints
parking brake mechanism
EGR system thrown in the garbage where it belongs
new shocks - stock OEM from Toyota
The brake master cylinder, rotors, pads, and lines were replaced in 2016, and the birfs repacked. I don't remember the exact mileage, but probably in the 180-190k range based on my fairly consistent driving.
I have some of the receipts somewhere, but I have moved cross country twice in the last 2 yrs and haven't found them yet. Wasn't planning on having a reason to dig those out of a box somewhere.
The head gasket was done back in 2000 when it had about 130k on it, was done by Toyota.
A/C system has been rebuilt several times over the years and blows cold.
Low range and central locker work, which I always verified annually.
The front seats have always had seat covers, the back rows never have. The Wet Okole covers it currently has are 25yrs old. There are water stains on the passenger seat due to keeping uninsulated steel water bottle on there; they'd probable wash right out but I never bothered since they are old enough now to just replace if you really want.
The Harley floormats have been in there since we got it, so the original mats are in good shape.
The original stereo head died a few years back, so I put in the Pioneer about 2 years ago. It has car play for apple and android as well as regular blue tooth and can plug your phone in the old fashioned way too.
Moon Roof works.
All power windows are functional if occasionally slow when not used for a while..
Radio antenna still goes up and down
Class III hitch and functional wire harness
Running boards
Hood prop from a 60 series, strut mounts are still there if you want to use them. I started using generic ones from McMaster-Carr rather than the hyper-expensive Toyota struts, same for the rear.
Tires are Yoko Geolanders with plenty of tread, including unused matching spare.
Orginal toolkit is still there, including the jack and associated hardware.
It runs well, I have no issues still taking road trips with it and would go cross country tomorrow morning without concern, but it is still a 32yr old truck and has the following issues:
-It has had a significant oil leak for many (like double digit) years. I put a mat under it in the garage and just keep it topped off. This is the biggest issue it has by an order of magnitude. TAULS - Toyota Automatic Undercarriage Lubrication System
. Seriously though, there is no rust under there!
-Paint has the usual dings and scratches of a 30yr+ vehicle with a quarter million miles, but it is the classic white paint and buffs out nicely
-Dent in rear quarter panel from when my dad backed into a tree while picking me up from summer camp in 1996 when we still had damage multipliers on the tail lights. Never got it repaired because we didn't want to repaint the truck just for that.
-Interior has a half dollar sized rough spot on the glove box due to transporting a very long piece of lumber sometime in the late 90s
-Both side mirrors had the mounting mechanism crumble and glued and ziptied back together a few times. Right side mirror power adjust only works on one axis now, I think side to side, but I haven't moved it in years since it is where I want it.
-Driver's seatbelt has the commonly seen lockup issue when trying to put it on. Just have to tug on it a few times, and it is fine about half the time.
-Windshield has a couple of dings on it, no cracks.
-trip meter only goes to 4 miles and gets stuck, I assume the gears for it crumbled due to age
-The D light on the dash is burnt out like on ever single other 80 series that has ever been built
-Aftermarket alarm system doesn't always lock the rear tailgate on first click when all doors are closed. I click it locked with my driver door still open or the rear hatch still open, whichever I am at. It also works with everything closed and just unlock and relock it. It has always been like this.
-Driving it makes other vehicles seem lame and boring
Just reply or message me with any other questions or if you want another pic of something specific.
