I recently purchased a 1986 FJ60 with a mere 250K miles. Everything is working except the horn - the last piece of the puzzle to pass inspection. Since this will be my daily driver, I need to get this little issue corrected.

I've removed the cover from the steering wheel and cleaned all the connections. Still - the horn doesn't work. It will, at random times, work when the button is pressed, but never on command.

I've seen several posts discussing this issue - but thought I'd try to get some direct feedback - can you folks provide some suggestions?!!

Thanks -

Search for the old washers behind the horn ring trick. It seems to work every time.

Yes sir - I have checked the fuse. I'll give SOR a call and see what they have to say.

And thank you for your collective help!

Last time I called SOR about this they could get me the horn ring but didn't have a number or even knew what I was talking about when I tried to order the pin. You might try CruiserDan.

The problem is the pin losing contact w/the horn ring

Take the steering wheel completely off. You might need a breaker bar or pipe over your socket wrench to get the nut off at the center of your steering wheel. (sorry if im being too obvious. not sure if you got that far) the horn ring is a brass ring mounted to the back side of your wheel. The pin is in the top of the steering column. Not sure how to get the pin or spring out w/out taking a bunch of stuff apart. Anyway if you take the horn ring off and put some small washers behind it this will put it a bit closer to the pin...tada...no more losing contact.

I bought a new horn ring for about $10 from SOR and put it in. Still didnt work. So I ended up putting it on top of the old ring. works fine now.

Thanks for all of your help. I pulled the steering wheel (G-man, thanks for the heads up) and fooled with the pin (I now know what / where it is) and the ring. I pulled the ring and cleaned the oxidation and gook. Tried using a washer and found it wasn't necessary - the contacts just needed cleaning.

I started this adventure to pass our state inspection. So with my hopes up, I drove over to the local shop. Well I failed, but it was emissions - approximately 5x higher than standards. So I need to now look into either a carb rebuild or replacement - any suggestions????

Might have to start a new thread for this one....

The pin, washer and spring can be bought for around 5 bucks via Cruiser Dan. Here's the part # for a FJ62.

I keep putting off doing this (not too eager to pull the steering wheel) but it's on my list of things to do soon ...

While on the phone with Dan, he suggested putting a little bit of moly grease (well, I think he said moly -- don't hold me to that) around the pin before installing it. I'm hoping this will all make sense once I remove the old one.

do a search about carb rebuild. Jim C. does a great job. If you want to rebuild it yourself, get the 2F engine manual and a rebuild kit. It's not too difficult...but how do you know the carb is the problem? Do you have the emissions manual and have you gone through and checked all the emissions systems? It could be your AIR system or catalytic converter that is not working.

2mbb - Good point, I need someone who knows what they are doing to take a look. But my LC does smell strongly of gasoline when running. I need to hunt down a good mechanic.
