Discovered tonight that nothing happens when i lay on the horn button in the center of the wheel on my '94. Also no horn when i lay on the 'panic' button on my rs3000 remote. And i know that used to work.

I'm not prone to using my horn so i have no idea how long this has gone on.

I pulled the horn relay and jumpered the contacts. horns work fine. This implies the fuse and power circuit work.

I bench tested the relay. Relay is fine.

How Bad Is It? What do i check next? FSM hasn't been much help. Seems like the issue may be in the steering wheel.

I pulled my horn, and added a suoertone, if you want I can sell you my OEM horn $20 +shipping

Right my OEM horns work fine when i manually close the circuit at the relay terminals.

So i surmise that the relay isn't being engaged.

Clock spring ?

Do i even have one in a '94? No air bag you know.

have you checked for corrosion at the terminals on the horns ?

yes. once again the horns sound fine when i manually close the circuit at the horn relay contacts.

ground for the relay is solid ?

It is the plunger in the steering wheel. They wear out and go bad. I just went through it.

I dunno man it's in the fuse box and looks clean and tight to me?

doubt it. I just pulled the horn pad out and tried connecting the one lead on it to ground. No honk.

Close inspection of the horn button contacts indicates that all four are a-ok. Like new condition which is surprising for a 20 year old truck that hasn't been babied.

I never got around to reconnecting the glass break sensor / blinky light for the rs3000 alarm after the last time i had the dash apart. maybe it is angry at me? I guess I'll try and reconnect that.

sensor/led for the alarm doesn't appear to have been it.

Well if there are no other suggestions, I guess at this point i could unbolt the under-hood fuse/relay box, make sure the contacts are still in position, and start tracing back from there.

This sucks. I have to tow a car home from 250 miles away. I need my rig.

You need the horn to work to be able to tow???

Anyhow, you stated that the RS3000 won't sound the alarm and neither will the horn button. If you manually activate the Relay the horn sounds?

Since the RS3000 can't sound the horn, then the issue would likely be something in the wiring between the junction of the RS3000 and Horn wiring and the relay - nothing to do with the horn button, clock springs etc etc. Given the info you provided, I'd bet it is whatever wiring is COMMON to the RS3000 and the horn button.

Time to get the meter out and do some fault finding. The horn grounds the control wire to the relay, so you can measure along the wiring from horn to relay and see if you get nominally 0 ohms between the wire and ground (body).

See attached schematic.

cheers,
george.

Thanks. I've been messing around with my head under the driver's fender so it wouldn't surprise me if i messed something up.

I think first i'll make an extension cord for the relay, but i've got a good arsenal of tools. I'll sort it out somehow.

after i replaced the aft knock sensor today i had the under-hood fuse box out to identify the wire i'm looking for, messed a bit with the harness connector it is probably connected through. Accomplished nothing.

or so i thought. successfully set off the horn with the rs3000 panic button. pad on the wheel still does nothing.
