Can anyone show me pics, or a schematic of the 1970+/- horn button setup. My manual only shows the newer key-in-the column setup.. I have the key in the dash
I think i am missing some sort or plastic or non-conducting isolator somewhere in the button

Steve

anyone???
I'll even throw in a pic of what i have

Do you have a wire coming out of your steering column, past the turn signal switch?

Just a single wire.

yes, you are missing the plate that locks into the two notches #5 (called horn contact seat in the other drawing) - the insulator is #4, it's a rubber flange that reaches down into #5 and up into #3

#5 also has attached the horn contact #11, which is a small metal cylinder attached to a spring (like in a ball point pen) - the contact rides on #6 in the lower pic as you turn the wheel

the parts you have are #1, 2, 3, 7, 8 - #8 is a M17 nut that hardly anybody carries

he should, he has the old style steering wheel - but the wire comes out of column closer to the firewall than the turn signal switch

much appreciated dsrtrdr and enyaw..i will have to look around for my missing pieces..

poser, i think you are talking about #6, i do have this wire and brush/contact..the horn works by touching the contacts, i am just in need of the insulators so i am not listening to the horn all the time

Thanks again

feel free to PM me if you don't find the pieces or need info on replacement

I also have a :hillbilly: fix if you find your horn randomly self-honking :whoops:

good luck

Form follows function. You can make an insulator out of almost anything that will separate the spring clip that the horn button attaches to from the horn contact. I have used cut up Gatorade bottle caps and the like, and experimented with a few poly pieces as well.

I have an NOS rubber insulator that I am holding onto for the day that someone finds a good mold maker I can work with.

 I used a cut-out from a milk bottle for a while :hillbilly:

a rubber washer from the hardware store is more reliable if you can find one with the right opening

See, now I'm thinking that a milk bottle cap would be closer in thickness to the factory rubber than any hardware store rubber would be. Needs to be less than a 1/16th of an inch, where all the hardware store stuff I've seen is 1/8th plus.

And I don't think the center opening is critical.

I found some nice flat large washers at Ace, no idea of the thickness, but it's closer to 1/16th than 1/8th IIRC - some have too small a hole, and it's a pain to cut properly by hand - depending on size, the washer may also need to be cut on the outside, since you have to allow for #3 to make contact with #5 when you actually push the horn
