Hood with fenders and grill attached

I just saw your post, yes, please post the pics! How hard is it to lift and how do you keep it supported when it is up? Any rattling and such? Did you have to modify your hinges/hood at all? I have the entire vehicle disassembled right now so I can do any mods with ease and I think this is the best time to do it. I think my two main concerns are rattling and weight. Looking forward to your pics and comments, thanks.

One piece hood

Please do post more pics of your set up. I have one I picked up years ago. Trying to decide if I am going to use it or not.

i would say that one is metal because you can see the separation points at the apron/hood. the fiberglass ones worked just like that, but they were one molded piece and you didn't have that line (unless someone painted it in, hard to tell from small photo).

here's the one i did on my first cruiser...all steel. didn't rattle all that bad. i split the fender because i didn't like the end of the fender sticking out...didn't want to wack my head. for closure, i used to have jeep holddowns at the rear sides (you can see the bolt holes), but later knocked the pins out of stock hood hinges and ran hitch pins through there. not sturdy enough to be standing on the fenders or anything but still pretty dang stable. bolted apron to hood at the rear, welded at the front. used a long square piece that ran the length of the bib in front, with bolts into "L" brackets on the frame. the stock bib hinge allowed way too much movement.

My dad did a one piece tilt frontend similar to nuclearlemon using the factory sheetmetal and cutting the fenders horizontally but used the factory bib hinge in front. It worked well but did rattle slightly which was due to the open header roller cam 454. If I can track down pics I'll post them, this was almost 20 years ago.

Bunch of newbies. :p

That orange rig is Agent Orange. Charla Downey's rig... Ratpuke here on mud. All metal. Edit: Her fenders are actually Fiberglass IIRC. The rest is metal.

Hey Mud Duck.....thats funny as i just put up a thread asking the same questions....As for the one oiece front end on ebay, i picked it up and shipped to Co, i will post the finished product up as i make progress. I absolutely will have hinge on oem hinges up towards windshield. As for show and go versus ease of access, i'll take the abuse of having a fairy ass fiber front, but will chuckle when maintanence time rolls around. sittin on the tire is a joy considering i've rested on the fender for many a 40..........

I am with trollhole on this one, I don't get it. It is an easy job to pull sheet metal and replace. It also gives you a chance to deal with any surface rust developing in the mating surfaces. Looks getto, not to mention if it is all steel and for some reason it falls you are in deep doodoo not to mention the damage to the 40.

Cool, I found the pic, I had saved it on my laptop in one of my many imagery files. So no idea where it came from other than this website.

So folks, is it metal or fiberglass?

All of the comments are good so far, I'm not really sure what is mounted on 1970 fenders since mine were not installed when I bought the truck.

Trollhole has a good point, 30 minutes for a lot of access, and I have air tools to help out.

The EBay fiberglass hood is really clean and super cheap but shipping (to Texas) would be killer and I have a good hood, grill etc., I can't believe he has not sold it yet.

That's my BJ42, "Agent Orange". Everything is stock except the fenders which are fiberglass. Having that sort of easy access to the engine is great but it's a pain in the ass to open and close as is; however, with some mods it'll be easier to tilt. It's particularly handy at the car wash. FWIW, the 42 sports a 13B-T and the flip front was done in part because the motor was supposed to come out after a trip to Cruise Moab in 2002.

Thanks Greg. Who the f$#k uses the word "doodoo"? :flipoff2:

Years ago it fell 1x when someone jumped in to move the rig a couple feet without thinking. No damage was done. Appreciate your concern though.

Ratpuke, thanks for the info, Agent Orange is a good looking rig. I've read a lot of the build links doing mass amounts of research here but I have not seen a one piece hood build yet. Any build pics or links of your front hood assembly?

Any one else have one piece hood build pics or links that they can post?

Addressing the hood issues (i.e. hard to open, sometimes too much movement on rocky trails) is something that will get worked on...eventually. Right now, I'm working on getting her road worthy for ACT 2010 (needs a BC out of province inspection). Anyway, as requested, here are some pics:

I'll be putting on a different type of latch to minimize movement, although allowing movement occasionally is beneficial when the tires rub the fenders. As well, the fiberglass fenders are rubbing on the metal on the cowl, so I'll have to put some rubber there, or something.

All in all, I'm torn about this mod, although it is fun to pull up to a full service station and have the gas jockey kids struggle to get the hood open. ;)

Thanks. Unfortunately, I have only a couple build pics, and none apply to the construction of the hood.

Im going to mock mount the fiberglass front end, then form a skeleton frame from light wall tubing to keep the rattling to a minimum. Definetly tilting back towards the cap. I'll take pics as i progress. Autoloc has a kit that tilts forward from Summit for a couple hundred, its universal...........so you will need to do some fab work,

im just gonna start from scratch.

Heres a few pics tilting back on oem hinges, sat with it for an hour debating different tactics, will post as progress.
