um well. lets just say it stays closed but i have to use ahammer to open it:D . the pin is either too big or not big enough. in case i didnt say before i used a sheer pin 3/4" that slides in toa collar and is attached the the bumper with 2 washers spaced out. i think once i get a good idea and some time it will get torn off and redone. i dont want to buy anything because thinks its more fun to make something work from scratch.

the problem im having is i cant figure out something that i can make that is 1. fast to undo and 2. it cant rattle no matter how much i abuse it.

good luck on yours and if you got any ideas to help me out let me know.

I would look into the de sta co. line of latches...

They start under 20 bucks at McMaster.com search under draw latches.

Simple, fast, rattle free and strong.

Just my .02, I am interested to see what you come up with. :D

Got a bit more done...

Here are few pics of where I am at after this weekend. We got the swing arm latch done, the tire carrier hoop bent, fitted, and welded in place. It is coming along nicely.

As it sits right now...

Here are a few detail shots of the latch. I grafted a 3/8"plate into the swing arm to get the latch to sit right, I tapped threads into the plate to mount up the latch body. The De-sta-co latches are really stout and this thing really "clamps" down hard on the latch bracket.

pretty nice drew!!!!!!

ians welds look pretty sweet, did'nt know he had the skills ;) (just kidd'n ian)

anyone help ian on the cut and turn? i could'nt, been sick since thursday.

Here are just a few more, some of the swing arm open, it swings nice and smooth and stays where I stop it... we will see how it acts differently when I put my 92lb MTR up there with a highlift.

We bent up the hoop with IanB's tube bender, it was really neat to learn how to bend up the tubing. Very simple machine, very good results. I flared out the bottom to spread the load over more of the swing arm. In retrospect, I would have mounted the hoop to the front of the swing arm giving a bit more room to gusset front to back.

Thanks Jim, Ian has decided to wait to get the wieght back over the axles to set the final specs and stuff... so no cut and turn yet. I bet he chimes in, I think that is why we didnt cut and turn this weekend. And he is waiting on a pipe cutter.

Whats next?

Up Next:

Mounting the "tire carrier" I am using the factory tire carrier thingy that will bolted to the 1/4 plate on the hoop. Once the tire is mounted up and secured...

Gussets for most of the welded areas, like the hoop to swing arm and the hinge to hoop span. We will add new gussets to the brackets if we get any flex once we get it all bolted up.

I will start bending up a basket for a cooler (not a freezer or fridge) any suggestions? I am thinking of a Igloo marine cooler. Once I get it in hand I can make a basket to fit.

Also, I will be fabbing up a hi-lift mount once the tire is fitted up and bolted into place.

CB antenna mount.

Finish all the ends of the open steel.

Finish and paint/powder coat.

Hey man,
Awesome job on the tire carrier, and good luck with the hi-lift mount.
Not to get off subject, but, what 4" lift are you running on your '76? Got a '72 and want to fit 35's under the cruiser.
Thanks for the advise.

Lookin real nice man, I am very curious to see how it holds/flexes with that tire up there. Latch setup is great. Did you think about maybe doubling up on 2 of those angle supports and adding Drings? You could also maybe cut an angle off the bottom to take those corners off.

Keep on...

looks sweet! check Ebay for those Marine Coolers! I have seen them there cheap, I asked foro one fro Christmas, but the inlaws got me a cube on wheels instead. Cool cooler just not a marine :) I thinkt eh cube will work better for what I do with the family anyways.

this build just keeps gettin better and better. i'm interested to see how it holds after you got all that weight on it. keep up the good work.

Thanks for the nice words...

I am running the TPI smokey mountain kit. Honestly, I don't have a lot of experience behind the wheel of other kits, when mine has a bit of weight in the back it is really nice, otherwise it is a bit stiff... great flex though.

Overall, I am happy with it, but I am itching to ride in an OME suspended rig.

Hawk-

Thanks man, I too want to see what happens at final weight. I do wish I had a bit more room between the cruiser and the carrier, but I won't know what kind of flex will be there until I get it all bolted down and get the weight on it.

I planned not to pull from the rear with d-rings on the bumper, I will use a trailer hitch with a shackle attached to it.

And yes, I plan on lopping off the bottom corners of the brackets to make a little cleaner looking design.

Thanks man! :D

Thanks metalonmetal-

Yeah, I weighed my tire/wheel at 92lbs on the scale with the Hi-lift coming in a 26 lbs. The carrier wieghs at least that much. The only thing that has me worried at this point is controlling front to back flex in the hoop. I will gusset if the need arises...

...wish me luck!
