I have never understood why Toyota makes such a perfect truck as the 80 but fails to make a proper center console to rest your arm and hold your drinks while driving.

So finally to day I started making my own. The woodwork is over but it still needs a vinyl and carpet covering. I hopefully will finish that tomorrow.

It is made from a 8mm MDF, and it is in two parts, a deep compartment and the a shallow one ontop. The lid will be covered with sponge under the vinyl.

More pics later ;)

Nice - does that stick further out behind the seats then the stock unit? Not sure what I'm seeing under it in that last pic.

I'm thinking about something pretty similar, but in aluminum. Planning to split the main compartment lengthwise though to fit a 2M radio and sub-laptop like the Eee toward the drivers seat. And 12V receptacles & folding cupholders on the back.

It sticks one or two centimeters further in the back, on the last pic you see the rear heater vents that are covered by the original console.

I will cover them somehow, maybe just with a carpet. I will see how it looks when covered with vinyl.

I´m also planning 2 foldable cupholders on the back and two cupholders insted of one on the side, next to the parking brake lever.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

Ha Ha Ha that's no different than the stock one.

If you'll notice the dash, it's the early style ('93-94) not the later style. The early trucks didn't have a taller console as you can see in the pics he posted of the shorter factory console. So good work laughing at him for nothing.

I'll have to snap a few pics of the center console I have! It's kinda similar to what you are making!

Where did you get your steering wheel? It looks like a Toyota OEM but from which car/truck? Thanks

I'm going to build one myself and I see exactly what haffi is trying to do. I have a 94 with the low console and when I build mine I'm going to raise the arm rest height also. I want to reuse the same bolts and am running into some conflict with using these bolts and the design I have in mind. I'm trying to put 2 folding cupholders that I purchased, infront of the armrest while thinking about the laptop mount that I want to use and having enough room for the arm rest. I almost have it worked out though and I'll post some pics when I finish.

If you're looking for some really good cupholders go to ultimatecupholders.com and find the fischer cup holders. I learned about this through 97 FZJ80's thread about cupholders. You can go to the FAQ's, scroll down until you see BLING and click it. You'll see 97 FZJ80's cupholder thread there.

It is ready, well almost ready, still have to add some retainers to make sure the lids do not open to much.

It it taller than the original. It is about 40 cm from floor in the back. Similar height as the armrests on the door panels, when resting my hand on it it fits right on the gear shifter.

I got it from a used parts dealer, it came from a Carina if I remember correctly, it is a direct fit, no mods at all. I don´t know the year.

Nice job! I bet you could get a gray sharpie (permanent marker) to be a close match for the edges of the covering....Just a thought.

How tall is this guy? I'm 6 ft and it seems fine to me.

Why does it matter? What are you, some sort of jackass? He built something for his Cruiser, and he posted it. I made fun of the guy who used bondo to make cupholders, and everybody crapped. At least this dude is making his truck better for him.

That turned out better than I would have thought. If you have trouble getting those drink holders to hold different size cups get these. Fischer Cup Holder - Ultimate Cupholders - Cup holders for 5 Series and 7 Series BMW, Z4, Porsche Boxster / Porsche 911 996, Mercedes, Audi, Acura NSX and other fine cars. The ultimate cup holder / cupholder! I mentioned these earlier but didn't provide the direct link. They will hold varying sizes of drinks from cans to super size drinks.

I'm thinking about fiberglass and color match to black plastic near gear shifter and dash.

sweet job
