I have a Canadian Spec HJ60 with a 24v electrical system and 12v headlights. This vehicle is relatively new to me, having purchased it in August 2006. I have had two occurances while driving with the high beams on, when the headlights have gone dark. Immediately clicking the low beams on, gives me light and works fine. If i click back up to the high beams, they come on. Is there a relay or a circuit breaker on this system that might be getting a little "tired"?

You mean, the combination switch? A possibility, I'm sure. But, I'm hoping for something simpler. I'll look for a wiring diagram for a CDN HJ60 and see if there's anything that pops out as a definite maybe.

combo switch. mine is doing the same thing right now, real PITA.
:(

update: I put in a new wiring harness for my new lights and now the switch problem is gone. I suspect that it is due to the fact that now the combo switch is only carrying a few miliamps instead of the full load of the hibeams, and so it isn't arcing/pitting the same way.
I think it would be easier to put in a new harness than to fix the combo switch! And if it still doesn't work afterwards, at least you've still got an upgrade to your lighting.

It would definitely be an easy diagnosis and repair if the thing was just broken. A couple of weeks ago, I thought it was, but now, it seems to work fine. I still haven't determined exactly where the 12V system for the headlights splits out of the 24V system that powers most everything else in the vehicle. Of course, that's my fault because I haven't taken the time to trace the wiring.

could you please elaborate on the new harness you put in? The harness in mine is not in great shape, but I know little about wiring.
would it be possible to describe where you ran the wires, which relays and fuses you used and such?
I know that is a lot to ask...

thank you,
Jan

I'd say combination switch.. Mine was acting up last year about this time and doing some REAL funky things. It was mostly my high beams but every once in a while I'd flick off the high beams and get NO lights.. Replaced the whole thing with a used one from 4 wheel and its been fine since. You can replace just the light part but you have to take the whole thing apart..

any idea if it's a special combo switch for 24V on the HJ60?

I just replaced my combo switch in my HJ60, harness and all. The harness does say 24 on it but the part number on the combo switch itself is the same as the one on my FJ60 so maybe the 12 and 24 switch is the same. HTH?

It is just a switch, with no real current running through it, so i can see how the 12V and 24V units would be identical. Is this wiring harness for lights only? Or is it for all things electric?

Would you have the part numbers?

I pulled the replacement out of a parts truck I have so I'm not sure if these are the actual Toyota parts numbers. The number on the back of the switch reads Toyota 14-133 SAE Q81 QC81 but that doesn't sound like a Toyota number. On the harness itself on the main connector : 84310-60470
HTH

hey i had the same problem with my bj 60 if it is the same i don't know, but have a look at the head lamp relay under the steering colume covers it is right at the top. i just took it apart and sanded the points has been working great ever since

Seems like a logical fix. I'll take a look. Thanks.

Hey! Right on!

It seems that my post has helped a few people out, and that is truly great to hear. I'm glad that I can give a little back to a place that has given me so much.

Electrical problems sometimes makes me more nervous than a penguin in a bowling alley, mainly because you can't return the expensive parts once you've bought them. And it can get expensive if you take the shell game approach, or the process of elimination. Luckily for all of us cruiser addicts, this fix doesn't require parts, only some time.

Glad to hear you fixed her...

your 12 volt probably comes off the low side battery in the series. Which if it does creates a bad balance in the batteries.

I would install a new harness and run the lights on 24 volts. Use 24 volt H4 bulbs in new lenses.

Lowenbrau mentioned frieghtliner sells 7 inch round replacements for 30 bucks.

Painless wiring can make the harness, just stiplulate 24 volt relays. that would be the main difference.
