The cars in the driveway and the bugger wont start. It started a couple of days ago before me and a mate cleaned up the wiring and then for a little bit the started moter would tick but the engine wouldnt turn. Read a few fourums and one bloke suggested to rock it back and forth in third gear and try again. We did this and now the starter moter wont even tick??

Any Suggestions?

Check grounds, fusible links

Check the battery(s) condition. If in question put a charger on it. While charging do this: Hit the starter motor on the side with a hammer while someone turns the key. Sometimes old starter brushes stick causing them to lock up.

Pull the coil, clean the bolts holding the cage its in. Run a wire from the aluminum case of the ignitor to the wheel well. Should solve your problems, and make your headlights brighter too....

Coil on a diesel?

There are contacts that wear over time in the starter. As they wear it takes a stronger power source to bridge the contact gap. So a strong or freshly charged battery may work for a while. If the contacts are the issue it will get worse and worse as they wear. You can also test by jumping from a test wire to the starter directly to see if it engages the starter motor.

Many pics of the contacts in this thread- Here are the Toyota part #s for a starter rebuild.
