Today I did some work on the trailer hitch (it came with the truck -I needed to weld a 2" receiver onto it), and have decided, after it was together, that I would like to have something a bit cleaner and stouter, and not have it sticking out and down so much, so I will make another. The one I added the received to doesn't fit properly anyhow, as the bolt holes are not aligned right. I wasted a little money on that receiver, as I need to get another one, which is a drag.

I also worked on the air cleaner dust bucket move, which is nearly complete, and then welded up 2" extensions to my anti-sway bar links. With lots of different tasks to complete, it is easy to get sidetracked!

In the next day or so I plan to cut the hole in my floor pan for the pto shift lever. Once that's done, I can look at getting a coat of SEM bed liner on the underside of the cab, and the inside floor pan as well.

On the accel cable. Maybe post a pic of the two ends you are dealing with. But the old style, "barrel" end that you probably have will come off the accel cable. They are only soldered, or brazed on. I had to adjust the choke cable on my 60 one time, as they are not adjustable. I didn't have a torch at the time, so I catually used the gas stove in the house. But either way, I heated the barrel a little, till I could slide it, then I moved it up on the cable.

In the very least you can probably heat the end, till the barrel comes off, then attach your new end, if you have it. Perhaps it will go on the same way. Drop some solder on it while it is hot, and let cool, I bet it will work.

I've tried to splice cables on lawn mowers, and it rarely worked. Once you cut one and try to simply stick more cable on it. It is very difficult to get a good bond.

Thanks again for the excellent advice. I'll try and remember the next time to take pictures of the accel. cable ends. One looks straightforward, the other does not.

Hey Dan,

thanks for the encouragement! Here's an update:

I've been working on another timber frame job and finish after dark every day, and I'm finding metal a little cold to work on at this time of year. Progress has slowed considerably.

That said, I have made a few advancements, and I keep forgetting to bring the camera. I'll try to remember next time.

I re-did the dust bucket on the air cleaner, narrowly avoiding a welding nightmare.

I have fabricated a bracket to hold the p/s reservoir to the left hand inner fender, and will be mounting it in place soon. It's too cold to paint, so that slows me down a bit. When the metal is warm from the welding, I can throw a bit of etching primer on and that's about all I can do.

The drag link end finally arrived from Brazil and fortunately it fits the ZF steering gearbox pitman arm just fine. It also has a 17mm end, so it will hook into my stock drag link, which is good, though it does mean the weak link in the system will now be the other end of the drag link, where it joins the center arm with the puny 40 series TRE. I'm wondering if I should beef it up with something custom....

I'm not decided on what to do with the steering column. I sat in another 45-series cab the other day, and noticed that the clearance from the top of my lower thigh to the underside of the stock steering wheel was pretty much the same as what I have with my 60 column. Stock, it's a crowded seating position, and lifting my leg to push the brake pedal involves splaying my right knee to the side. I'm going to try and get a second opinion before re-doing my 60 column, given this new information.

How roomy do others out there with 45's find their cab, when it comes to operating the foot pedals?

I have marked out a hold on the underside of the cab floor to put the pto lever through, and and looking to find the right sort of rubber grommet or boot before I chop into the metal.

I have a $600 OEM parts order on its way from Japan, which includes such things as factory fog lamps and their mounting brackets, the correct vsv for my engine shut down, a speedo cable, a parking brake cable, the upper-cab section weatherstripping, and a bunch of other minor things. Kudos to Dave at Japan4x4 for his patience with my numerous e-mails and requests for unconventional parts. It was a 6 week process.

I'm going with the OME shocks and steering damper, after some thought. The yellow color of the OME shocks is a bit repellent to me, so I might re-paint them black.

And last Saturday I spent 8.5 hours on differential set-up. The front went fairly smoothly, once i realized the pinions had gotten mixed up between the two diffs, but the second was a royal PITA. I'm planning to have another go at it this coming Saturday. It's pretty tricky reading the oil paint wear patterns sometimes, and of course, I am a total neophyte at this, so it is not going quite so smoothly as I would have hoped. As always, more patience is a good thing.

I removed the vac. reservoir and put the old one (the first one I restored) back in place on the right side of the chassis. I need to get some rubber lines to connect it to the hard lines on the firewall. I also need to bend up the brake lines for both axles, and for along the firewall. I will need to figure out the flex lines for the brakes as well.

I located a decent ashtray on Ebay last week and won the auction, so that will be on its way fairly soon. Another package from $OR arrived recently too, containing such things as an OEM door handle, an after-market door latch mechanism, bolts to mount the pto winch, and the weatherstripping for the top of the windshield frame. I've got all the weatherstripping bits I need for this re-build - finally. I feel lucky to have gotten the pieces, because a lot of stuff for these old trucks is going into 'obsolete' mode right now, as production is terminated in Japan. I suggest to anyone contemplating a similar rebuild to mine to start shopping as soon as they can or face the prospect of being SOL for getting the stuff.

Any progress with your rig Dan?

Oh, mine is still waiting. I don't know if I should be proud or hate myself forever for letting it sit so long. I told myself that until the White is on it's own axles again (should be in a month or two, depending on work) that I wouldn't even touch my HJ (well, that, and that I had some cash in the bank so I wouldn't be waiting to afford parts). And so far, I've done a good job of that. I literally haven't even tinkered with it--at all!

Self control, but I'm not sure if I like it. :) At least I've got the PTO winch purchased, and a heater rebuild kit, so I'm not driving myself totally crazy before I pull it into the shop and make a mess out of it. :) And my HJ might take a back seat to my Dad's FJ-40 (there's the 3B/Safari Turbo/H55f sitting in the shop waiting for it) if it has a hard time with emissions again....

Patience, patience...

Factory fog lamps?!??! I hate you so much right now. :)

Dan,

is your pto winch complete? What year is it off of? Single or dual outputs from the gearbox?

I still need to section the 3-piece pto driveshaft I have (came off an HJ61) - it will be 2-section when I'm done. The mounting brackets for the pillow blocks are on the 'to-do' list as well.

As for your raging jealousy over the fog lamps...you could could turn that energy to productive use you know ;)

Actually, getting the fog lamps wasn't really the exciting bit (in fact, there was a US vendor stocking those lamps not too long ago). The cast mounting brackets for the lamps to the chassis rails - those little items were the real score.

Apparently my package from Japan made it to Canada Customs on the 9th, which could mean delivery in, oh, a week or two.

Put in an hour on the truck today, doing a little more welding and fabbing on the p/s reservoir mounting bracket. It's nearly done - maybe I'll even remember the camera next time

99% complete. 1974. Front and rear outputs. (not sure I've ever seen both used though...)

I am, I'm using it to get the White back together enough to start "tinkering" with my HJ. :) Here's a teaser pic of the White. That's the emergency/parking brake assembly.... Not a single fleck of paint on the truck in that picture. :)

Who needs Christmas?

A very juicy package arrived today, and if any of you are as excited by shiny OEM bling as I am, you're going to quite possibly enjoy the following sets of pics.

Here we have the goody box, and the a/c-specific fan belt, and the somewhat lucky find of a parking brake cable for LHD HJ47

Last two - the special vsv for controlling the intake butterfly, the 'cushion for the roof panel...

... plus the fog lamps and 'holy grail' lamp mounting brackets. :bounce: :bounce2:

I will take the camera down to the truck tomorrow to update y'all as to where the rebuild is at.

Today was my final day of work for the year, so I'm looking forward to both kicking back, and getting some work done on the rig over the next two weeks.

Very, very nice.

What's the correct finish for the pillow blocks for the winch? I'm thinking I'll just powder coat mine black, but I have no idea what colors the winch stuff was from the factory.

I believe they were finished in the same color as the chassis and bumper gussets. All the pto winch parts I have come across have been black.

That's what I'm going with anyhow.

Finally dragged the camera down to the truck. Here's what I have to show.

First, I couldn't resist seeing how the fog lamps would fit up, given the winch parked in place. I put the brackets facing back, and mounted them in place (with 7/16" bumper bolts) using the more forward of the two rear holes in the bumper gusset. The bracket nicely covers over the mounting bolt in the rear hole, and there's plenty of clearance on the right side where the winch operating lever swngs back and forth.

I'm really happy I bought the factory fog lamps - they are well made of quality materials (since they're from Japan, not China), they look great, and they fit in seamlessly. Worth every yen.

Here's a couple of pics of the p/s reservoir, showing the location I chose to mount it as well as the bracket I have made for it. I can't remember what Toyota I found the reservoir in. The bracket is nearly complete - it needs and additional support on the upper side to stiffen it up.

The third pic shows the the engine in place, and the new fan belt in place. It was a bit of a guess as to which Denso belt might work, as the a/c compressor and mounting bracket is out of an '88 HJ61, but this one turned out to be the right length.

A few more shots of the engine sitting in place. I hope I don't have to pull it out again. In the second pic you can see how long the pto shifter rod is, coming out of a truck with an automatic transmission - I need to chop 90% of the rod away to shorten it to the correct size, something I plan to do tomorrow.
