HJ 61 Exhaust Advice Needed

I talked to John from Radd Cruisers and the shop is still running as normal. I had talked to him about getting the exhaust done there, but a day or so later the rusted pipe gave up and I won't be able to wait until June when he returns from the interior. Figured with all the advice and know how gleaned form this site I might have a chance at piecing it together myself.

Did you get a chance to work on the exhaust or try out the expander?

I actually looked further into these and watched a couple of videos on U tube and ended up purchasing this one.

Hopefully it's strong enough to expand, I'll just apply some heat before I expand and it should be quite easy.

Still haven't made on move a on this, my mechanic mate has been working flat out here 7 days a week, so I can't use the hoist, I'm hoping to do it on Sunday, so we'll see how it goes

Started On my way! my 3 inch exhaust, we had a bit of a problem with one nut from the flange off the turbo, took about 3-4 hours to get that sorted, so we're halfway there.

I also used the pipe expander as well, it works but not like they show in the videos etc. it slowly opens the end up and you can fit another pipe inside, but only 10mm and also you have to keep moving the pipe expander around, but for $25 I'm happy

All right!! Good job. Did you use the existing flange and weld it on to 3"? I hope my expander works better for price I paid for it... What did you end up ordering for pipe pieces? Good luck with the rest of the install. Can't wait to see some pics.

All finished and very happy, I didn't end up using the pipe extender, I just went with the butt welds. For the flange we found a piece of tubing in between the current pipe and the 3 inch so we welded that to the old pipe on the outside and then put it on the inside of the 3 inch pipe and welded it, that way we could still get the nuts on.

So we ended up using about 3 metres of straight pipe and 3 45 degree bends, it was difficult getting it past the shockie under the chassis and then missing the back wheel, couple of tries there, but all good in the end.

I also welded in the bolt for pyro as can be seen in the first pic

I'll take some more pics later as I need to put a couple of clamps on one section, but we didn't have the clamps so I have to order them.

It sounds awesome, quicker pickup and actually got the red light to come on today, sounds fantastic when you hear the turbo spinning.

That is fabulous! I can't wait to get going on mine. Nice to see some immediate results after the install. Thanks for the pics. I will order up the same for pipe pieces, I am going to run it in same location. Were butt clamps need where a weld was impossible?

Hey mate

The stuff we used in the middle to secure the joint it's hard to explain and I'll,get you a pic, it's like a roll of spun stainless steel, it's real thin like a flex joint, but it's for exhausts.

If I were you I would order 2x exhaust brackets for the middle, I just forgot these and I would have to have waited another 2 weeks before they arrived.

Thanks, I am going to order up all the pipe, bends, and brackets today. I am lucky I have a shop close by and will have it tomorrow. Here is a pic of my truck the exhaust is going into.

Nice looking truck mate.

Just take your time going past the rear shockie and the rear tyre, I also cut all the brackets off the old exhaust and reused them on the new one.

These are the brackets I am going to use on the stainless steel twist type flex pipe

They're a nice looking bracket but unfortunately the only person whose going to see them is the unfortunate pedestrian I run over

I would recommend using V-band flanges on the exhaust system. At least if you don't go the stainless route. I have done a bit of custom exhaust jobs on different cars and and it doesn't take long at all before the pieces rust shut! When, not if you need to take it apart again you will simply use 5 minutes top with the V-bands. Without you will use hours hammering and swearing trying to get the exhaust pipes come loose and moveable.

They cost a little more, but well worth it

by the way i worked at a exaust shop never got paid and went home with a exaust bender had to use a tow truck to get it home
