That is great information, are you going to add a flex pipe section after the first bend? I have read it will add to the longevity of your exhaust system and mounts by decreasing the overall vibrations from the engine along the length of your exhaust system. Do you think 3" will fit following stock routing? I have the PTO winch that might make things tighter.

I checked out your restoration project (The Grub), nice work Spudman!

I have both the pto winch and 3" pipe that follows the stock routing pretty closely... It will fit but it will be somewhat tight, totally do-able thou...

Also the flex section is greatly encouraged, especially with stainless pipe...

blis, Thanks for the response. Hoping to take it in today to get a quote, probably not going to like what they have to say!!

Better grab a seat before hearing out their quote

Yeah, unfortunately at the mercy of the shops for this particular upgrade.. Anyone know a good exhaust man on southern Vancouver island, BC??!! HELP ha ha ha

Yes, 3" will fit... but it is a little snug especially if you put the flex in (which you should)

Here's a thread talking about it: https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/786636-12ht-3-exhaust-help-other-stuff.html

I posted my pic's in there on how I built mine.

I would recommend putting some sort exhaust or resonator on to help with the highway drone... especially if you do highway driving. A 60 and a diesel is loud enough as is! lol

I do believe there are performance gains going to a 3"... the one thing that is very noticeable is that the EGT's decrease much faster idling and coasting off throttle.

Crimson Cruiser,

Great pics and explanation of how you built yours. If I removed my exhaust and then copied the old with new 3" and had someone weld it up for me, would it fit into my truck? Or did you have to monkey around with it a bit to get it in place?

Probably not. There isn't much room for error on the down tube to the ~90deg bend and flex pipe to the back. The space between the frame rail and the transmission is tight for a 3". I had to cut, tack, measure, re-check, re-tack, cut, adjust.... blah blah blah... a few times before it was just right. There are just too many variables to cut and weld a 3" out of the vehicle.

If you don't have a Sawz-all, grinder and a welder (or access to one) it's best to drop it off at a muffler shop and get it done.

Yeah fair enough, I have access to all the equipment needed, I just don't have the welding skills to put the final product together. Trying to weigh out all of my options. Thanks

Hey guys

I don't have the PTO but I do have the 80 litre extra tank running down the middle, and yep there's plenty of room, ATM there is a big whoop arse muffler in there as well, no wonder it can't breathe :bang:

Thanks for letting reminding me about that flex pipe, I actually forgot to include that.

Yeah the only tight spot will be mounting the flange to the turbo with the 3 inch, might also have to look at utilising the original bracket somehow.

 Spudman

Sooke...... Are you Cody?

I tig'd my 2.5" stainless straight pipe and had great results... sounded great... lots of whistling. (but I have a 3B)
I'd go 3" if I were you. Six cylinders can get a bit"droany" with a straight pipe and I have yet to hear a muffler that can muffle the droan and keep the whistle. That being said.... you can always add a muffler

I know a guy in Vic that will build you a 3" stainless exhaust but he builds really nice stuff and its not cheap.

Cam

Feel free to PM me if you want any more advise.

Being its impossible to drive far , you might have better results locally if you were to ask this question in the Vancouver island cruiser club . I know in Vancouver ateb is pretty much top of the food chain for an exhuast system that is tucked up inside the frame right through. Not cheap but for the craftsmen ship better deal than an exhaust shop I figure. If it was my truck I'd put 3".

Tell me its not true?! You sold your beast? Thanks for the advice, I just sent you a PM. I'll take it all with a grain of salt.

So after getting a few quotes (stainless was out of the question in terms of budget, upwards of $1400) I have decided to go with aluminized 3" following stock routing but exiting closer to the rear wheel. Thanks to all who gave advice. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing the difference. Pyro and boost gauges are currently installed, just awaiting a manual boost controller so I can take the washers off the wastegate controller. Next step will be to increase boost to 14 PSI and adjust the fuel screw accordingly.

Suggestions as to what people have found to be optimum without excessive EGTs? Keep in mind I do not have an intercooler.

Thanks

Cody

Hey Cody

Aluminised, what's that, a full aluminium exhaust.

The reason I asked is it would be a pita if you ever got a leak and had to weld it up.

 Spudman

Cannot believe the prices you are being quoted for SS exhaust systems. We are talking about approx. 6ft of 3" SS, a SS muffler, flex joint, one elbow and a few minor bend, $600 to $700 tops and that's even expensive. I mean 3" SS straight thru muffler off the shelf are only $150 retail, I mean every Scoobie Doo (WRX)has bought one?

A place in Kununurra quote me $1500, there's 1 on eBay for just over $1100, when I had look under my car, I thought fxxx this I'll make my own.

4m of 3 inch pipe 4X 3/4 bends and a flex pipe purchased in Perth and shipped up here for a mere $270
