That MWE is cool. You may want to add this to your list too: North Shore Bike Racks. Watch the video to get a sense of how it swings back. The Canadian $ has cratered against its US cousin so you may be looking at a better deal.

haha small world! i live in bozeman and work in Big Sky. i think ive passed you quite a few times. i always recognize another 100
either way, what rack did you end up going with? Im looking for a hitch mount rack also! only a few more months until downhill starts!

I've had a Thule T2 4up for 10 years and it has had a hard life with only needing the pivot bushings replaced once. Great rack and Thule just replaced two of the hook sliders that hold the front wheel under warranty 10 years later!!! I have a buddy with a Kuat which Is sweet but double the cost of the T2. The Thule is hard to beat.

i've used Softride's patented rack which keeps the bikes parallel to the ground while giving you access to the tailgate.

they even used to sell a bbq attachment which was amazing. i think they called it the car-b-que

the Kuat NV is the way to go, bar none. The whole rack tilts DOWN and out of the way when you need the extra room..

Don't mess around, Get the 1up rack, it really is the Land Cruiser of the bike rack world. No plastic parts to fade or break, the whole thing is aluminum, it's built in the US, it's modular, and it requires basically zero trickery to fit multiple bikes without bars hitting seats, AND it has the highest clearance of any tray style rack out there.

I’ve had the 1up since 07. All Aluminum no problems. My old T2 lasted a few yrs before rust started to show. The 1 up you can store in the shipping box. I hate driving with a rack not in use. And I can go single rack if I like if I’m going solo. It does fine on fire roads. I personally haven’t gone through any burly trails because I’m not usually biking around the area. Plus it can hold my snow boards. Adjusts simply. I can throw my daughters 20” wheel bike easily. Easily one of the best bike related purchases I’ve ever made. You hardly see them second hand because everyone keeps them.

Kuat NV2 - replaceable parts if something breaks and bullet proof construction. I don't have a problem with the lift gate with either set of bikes (road and MTB).

FWIW, I am going to build a fork rack that goes into the cargo area and will be convertible for both MTB and road forks. I will post once done. While I love my Kuat, I also like the idea of locking the bikes up away from the undesirables.

Spent a bunch of time looking at options that would hold up to full-time travel, and couldn't be happier with the iSi carrier. It's super sturdy, keeps the bikes high so they don't get hung up on anything, and works great with dual rear swingouts.

here's the Softride (sometimes labeled Weathertech) "Carbq" attachment to the Softride Access Rack. IMHO the ideal rack for an 80 because it allows for tailgate to be put down without removing rack. the base is also easy enough to create your own attachments for basically anything.

If you only need to carry 1 bike - I strongly recommend the 1UP. Really well made - and here is the best part. If you fold it all the way forward it folds low enough that the tailgate can open fully. Plus it takes up very little space. I leave mine on all summer long since it such low profile when folded.

I was going to file a few notches in to hold it in place when folded, but I determined it wasn't needed since it stays in place on its own.

I have the Rocky Mounts Backstage swing away platform rack. I believe its the only on the market that has integrated swing away with platform. I have drawers in back of my rig so this allows me to either (1) fold down the rack w/out bike one it and open the bottom and top and pull out each drawer or (2) swing the whole thing out to the side of the car with 2 bikes on it. I also rigged up 2x 3 gallon rotopax fuel containers that I use when I don't have bikes on the back. The weight gets too heavy with 2 bikes and 6 gallons of gas back there. it's rated for 120lbs but overloading it is not recommended.
