High idle in P & N after driving (1600-2000 RPM's). Anybody have similar issue?

I am still interested. My truck is still doing the same thing. Gas pedal is not sticking. I just learned to live with it. Any possible culpriits that you guys have come up with?

One possible culprit that someone else came up with is the dashpot. I had to do some research to find out what the dashpot actually does. It is a vacuum actuated diaphragm that holds the throttle open above idle during deceleration to control emissions. My guess is that there is a temporary rich condition when you let off the gas and the dashpot keeps the throttle open slightly to let in enough air to burn the excess fuel so you do not have unburnt hydrocarbons in your exhaust, because those are very bad for the environment. So, if you have a bad dashpot then it may keep the throttle open when it is not supposed to and/or keep it further open than normal. I bought a new one this week and hope to install it this weekend so I will report back as to whether or not this works for me.

I'm gonna need forum assistance here

Try this next timethis starts up and report back: pull over, keep the engine running, and go open your gas tank to let some air in.

I drive 350 miles in 90 deg heat. Came off the road to fill up and the engine idled high. On fillup, there was a whole bunch of vacuum in the tank. After filling up, and starting back up, all symptoms were gone.

I wond be driving long haul again for a while so I'm hoping someone might want to help me replicate this scenario.

That is all.

After lifting the pedal again with no movement or change in idle speed, I moved the throttle linkage assembly (rather forcefully) & it returned to 600 RPM idle speed. There was no visible rust in the vicinity though. I have pulled on it in the past with no change but this time I just got tired of the problem and yanked on it with a fair amount of force. What ever was binding in there loosened up a bit but is still binding up after driving. However, after a fair amount of WD40, the idle is at 1000 or so RPM's prior to adjusting the throttle linkage.

I've been able to to that as well, but each time I hit the gas again, it comes back up to 1400 or so. I even made a cute little bent rod thingy out of #6 solid copper wire so I don't burn my hands. I did try venting the gas tank again, I shut the thing down and everything was A-OK. Dunno. I'll keep messing with it.

Un-fricking-believable how much overthinking there is/was in this thread.

:bang:
