I finally got everything back together. Went to go fire it up and it turns over, it just won't fire.:frown::censor:

Checked all connections
Checked trouble codes
checked spark
checked timing
checked fuel
check fridge for beer, opended one and gave up.

Not sure what I screwed up, but if anyone has any ideas, am more than all ears!!!!

MAF plugged in? That one is easy to forget...
Dist Pickup plugged in?

Do you have a "check engine" light with the key in the on position? Some folks pull the EFI fuse to depressurize the system and leave it out...

Just a few quickies...

I've never done those ... :o :whoops:

Yup,

CE says everything A ok
I didn't remove the EFI fuse. I generally only do that when checking compression, which I guess I should do tomorrow.
MAF plugged in
Dissy plugged in.

I'll see if the compression is way off. Maybe I screwed up the cam timing so it is just acting as a big air pump?! I thought I did by the book, though.

Thanks for the support and ideas! Keep 'em coming. Wifey is getting impatient

I'd pull the valve cover and verify your camshaft timing visually. Also, check your distributor timing- maybe you have it off a tooth or 3? (does the 80 have an idiot proof distributor like a 5s-fe engine in a Camry, or is it toothed?)

I've also been known to do stupid things like put spark plug wires on the dist. cap in the wrong order...

The rotor is idiot-proof.

Not so sure about the dizzy considering I busted Rory's on his 80...:rolleyes: When you say toothed, do you mean a gear that goes inside to the top of the head and is on a shaft that goes in and out (sorry--couldn't really think of the technical terminology on this one)...

Other things that I can think of off the top of my head: make sure no fuses are blown, are you getting the starter to turn over? How about plug wires--are they correctly attached from plugs to dizzy in correct firing order?

Fuel delivery is something else to consider--fuel injectors plugged back in? Fuel lines are good?

Good luck.

Fuel injectors were cleaned and blueprinted and snugged up. I replaced the pressure reg. and the filter. To check fuel, I pulled off the return line and it came spraying out of there. Is there another way to check for the fuel?

Good luck.

I checked the fuses for the ECUs and the EFI. Went back and verified the firing order on the dizzy.
Starter turns over, it was getting hot toward the end and acting up, but that is normal for this truck.

I'll pull off the valve cover again and make sure the dots line up at TDC and baseline t the timing again. Boy I sure am learning ALOT!

I checked the timing again until the battery failed last night. When I first plugged everything in, i was getting 3 deg., but no fire. When i checked again last night, it wasn't even on the marks, it was almost a 1/4 turn to the left where the pulley is obstructed by the block housing. Maybe i was just too tired.
I'll give it a go again today and see.

Thanks,
Jeff

The fun continues...

Well it looks like timing is the least of my worries now. After taking the valve cover off again, I noticed that the slipper guide had some chips out of the front of it. After a little research, this looks like bad JUJU and will need replacing.
The good news is Dan says I don't have to take everything off again. The bad news is, the engine has to come off the mounts a couple of inches and it is a 27 hour job! Yeah for me!!!!!!!!

oh darn, sorry to hear that bro!

She's ALIVE!

Okay, Ryan you win. It was sometng stupid that I checked and rechecked. I had the cams 180 off. It idles wonderful, BUT
There is a whirring sound coming from the DS kind of around the alternator - intake plenum area. Wifey descibes the sound as flowy. Any ideas?
I looked again at the slipper and determined that I may have over reacted. So I out a new tnsioner that Dan recommended and I'll check on if a few miles to make sure.
I am hesitant to drive it yet with the mystery noise, but at least it's running!!!!!!!
Thanks again for all the help and support.

Jeff

It's always something little. Are those an interference motor? Having the cams 180° out could cause some issues if it's an interference engine...

Flowy sounds from the intake side are usually some form of vacuum leak...power steering idle up vacuum circuit or something?

Glad to hear its running!

The wheels on the 80 go round and round!

Ryan, you are good! It was the PS. Some how it burped so I have filled it back up and rechecking it everytime it is run for a bit.

I did a bad thing and used the test drive as an excuse to go see Jon and Basket Case. That is VERY COOL!!!!! What a sound when that engine fires up!

We were listening to the 80 commenting on how smooth it was and it stumbled a little, Jon put his hand down over the dizzy cap and it bit him. Guess she doesn't like to be touched there on the first date :D. Everything sounds good so far with the stethescope, so we'll run her and see what happens.

I went and picked up a cap and rotor in the event I cracked it, before moving on to the spendy wires that I replaced already 18 mo. ago and we'll go from there. I'll recheck the timing now that the brains have been unscambled as well (both the 80 and mine!)

Oil and coolant change this afternoon...

Jeff
