Just picked up my next project. A 1964 FJ40. This will be the oldest model year I've ever done.
This will be a mostly stock rebuild minus a few key, mostly safety related upgrades.
It has a 76 front axle, so disk brakes up front, and I'm going to install discs in the rear as well. This will also need a new rear axle. This will require a dual master with power assist. After that an OME 2.5 suspension will be installed.
Other than those items a trollhole carb (big windows are impossible to find) and dizzy will be installed.
I love the old school hard top.
It has most of its parts intact which makes this a doable project. The rust is,pretty minimal for its age. New rear sill etc should be all it needs, maybe some front floorboard work but we will have to see what it looks like after sandblasting. Anyways looking forward to this build, probably won't get started for another month or so.

sweet project, glad that you're modifying the stock brakes...i hate seeing people leave the stock single reservoir brake masters.

Nice. Please post photos along the way.

Finally got going on this build. Pulled it into the garage a few days back and started to blow it apart. I did manage to find an original big window carb! and I also found out that the rear axle has been upgraded to fine spline spiders etc. So I'm good there.
Also received a bunch of original paperwork from the PO and discovered that the engine was completely gone through (rings, all bearings etc) less than 20k ago. So I'll do a visual and replace all the gaskets etc, but so happy to find the engine should be good to go.

This build is going to be a fast one. I'll really hit it hard mid June, but should be done by the end of summer. :) *cross fingers*

I've already purchased 80% of the parts needed for this build. Full OME 2.5 lift kit, complete rebuild kits for all four corners from cruiseroutfitters, Rear disc brake kit, New brake hard and soft lines, etc etc etc... This is why I think the build will go much faster. In the past most of the delays are around being able to afford parts as I go. Not this time! :)

Anyhoo, pics in a bit...

Nice

Looking toward seeing more of your new resto mod build

Looks like he had an old school kayline swing out carrier on the back... I take it your not putting it back on :)

Also has the dealer box heater... Are you updating that or keeping?

Thanks!

Yep, I am tossing the Kayline Tire Carrier. :)

As for the box heater, I am going to replace it with a new one. I found this one at Old Air Products. It matches almost exactly and has options for defrost! I'll paint it white like they were back in the day, and make my own custom decal to attach.

Thx for the info! I already found one on amazon. :)

I'm wondering if the water pump is available or if there's an alternative?

I looked at sor quick and they show early water pumps ... Probably an aftermarket ... I recall the early were gone and later ones were being fit

There was some in oz that I think were aftermarket and some mudders got some.... Sor may have theirs from down under

May want to ask in 25 section

Got a full set of new OEM DISC BRAKE WHEELS with 33 X 10.50 ko2 AT's and stainless acorn caps! :)

This was Ken's rig, right? He was super excited to have you restore it. He just wasn't giving it the love it deserved. I'm excited to see how it turns out!

Yes indeed this is the one. It's funny but years ago he was talking about me doing a resto on it. I'm glad I was able to get ahold of it. It's in great, fairly rust free condition. The owner previous to Ken resprayed the inside grey and the out side green which preserved it quite a bit.

Ken was telling me that the rig was running great and the only reason he stopped driving it was because he was going to do a 76 front axle swap. He brought it in to a guy to do the swap, and the guy flaked out. The axle was in place, but nothing was hooked up. Plus it needed a full rebuild. He got it back from the guy, parked it in his garage, and 18 years later I picked it up... :)

Discovered the original color was "apparently " sunny yellow.

Amazing how much dirt can end up under an FJ40 gas tank. Also found two original OEM wrenches! :)

Question. ..
Does the glove box door on a 64 mount the same way as later year 40's? I don't see the inner mounting tab that the inner hinge mounts to. And as you can see this one is all hacked.

Mine has the same "hacked" hinges as yours. The original comes with a couple brackets (one on each side) that are fastened to the inside of the glove box. Like this one:

So they are different. Can someone else post some more detailed photos? I'll do some looking around as well.
Thx for the information.
