Anyone from the Salt Lake area or southern UT that can get their hands on some freon??

I'm flying into Salt Lake and picking up my first cruiser. Unfortunately, the air has a leak and the seller wouldn't fix it or get it charged and I have to drive it back to Phoenix.

can you say hot??? I can get freon here, but of course you can't take it on a plane.

Anyone know someone who works in a garage, etc that has access to freon and can get me enough of a charge to get back to Phoenix?

I know it's a long shot, but had to try

You should pretty much be able to take it to any place that services ACs, but it's going to run you $50 per pound (maybe more) That's generally what it costs a shop to get, so it'll be hard to find a deal. (Unless you're Landpimp, who recently found a case of it at a yard sale and picked it up for like $5.)

Also, it may not be a leak. POs have been known to miss diagnose things like that.

Yea, but the problem is when I'm picking it up. Saturday afternoon, so most places will be closed.

You could buy one of those R134a conversion kits at any auto parts store and put it in yourself. Shouldn't take longer than an hour, and that's REALLY conservative. The kit has everything you need except freon, and the whole parts list will only run you about $20. Good luck!

The AC system really should be vacuumed out before doing an R134 conversion. The lubricants added to the two different refrigerants supposedly are not compatable.

...and you have to vac out the system anyway, as I undertand it - not just because of the compatibility issues, but becuase the system has to be in a vac state to accept the new freon.

I may be wrong though, it's been a while since I messed with it or really talked to anyone about the ins and outs of the AC system...

xrock,

Give Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters a call (www.cruiseroutfitters.com). He has some good connections around the Greater SLC area. If there's a place that can do it, he'll know where. His number is right on his site at the top of the page. Great guy that'll do his best to help ya out. Better call him fast though, cause I'm sure he'll be headin' out tonite to do some campin'/trekkin'.

BTW, who's Cruiser are you pickin' up? And feel free to give me a call as well if you run into any trouble, I don't have access to everything, but I have access to the Wasatch Cruiser Club... :D

Thanks for the assistance. He was able to give me the name of a shop I could stop at.

I'll write your number down. Hopefully, I won' need to call you :D

Thanks again for the assistance. I'll be in the Landcruiser Brotherhood as of Saturday.

Wish me luck!

So, how did the trek go?

:D

When it gets hot in my 55, I roll down the window. If it gets real hot, I roll down the back window. If it gets really, really hot, I open the wing window.

Did you get the white FJ62 that popped up in the For Sale section a couple weeks ago?

Nope- it was am 83 Brown one. Everything turned out fine. It drove like a champ and it didn't get hot until we got about an hour from Phoneix. But then it was REAL hot!

I'll post some pics soon.

I been driving my 60 for months with only 4-55 A/C in Phoenix.
(That's 4 windows rolled down at 55MPH, for you youngsters out there.)
No problems. If it gets rilly hot, I turn off the dash vents. :D
When it breaks 120°F again, I'll get a new used compressor and repair my A/C system.
Or when I get a job. Whichever happens first.

I already did the conversion, so now I just need to find the time to drop it off for a bit and get it filled. (then get the sniffer out to find a possible leak)
