Help with 8274 disassembly

Hi all

I'm.in the UK, but came across this site as seems really helpful with regards to the 8274 warn winch.
I have removed the brake drum and the spring and I'm left with the main brake shaft sticking out, I have removed the top of the case and I'm lifting the plate up when I pull on the main shaft, it starts to come out but then stops and won't remove all the way. Not sure if in missing a step can any one help me out, have attached a pic of how it currently etands.

Are you trying to to remove the shaft or the other part of the brake? The shaft needs to be driven out. Use a brass drift or a length of wood dowel (which is what I did).

Sorry I up loaded the wrong picture I am trying to get the main shaft out, I have a rebuilt kit here with new bjsh WTC ready to fit but could not get shaft on now from the link I know where I need to hit to remove it. Just hope I don't do any damage, what's best to use as I don't have any brass punches and no way to get any. When you say you use an length of wood dowel what is this please ?

I used a piece of 3/4" diameter wood dowel rod. It was smaller than a broom handle. Birch if I recall. Used it like a big punch with a 3 1/2 pound hammer. Any material that is softer than the steel your beating on will work. Brass, Aluminum, Wood, etc. It's a bit of a steep angle, so experiment with the best position to put the punch. Support the case good and give it a healthy whack. You are driving out the bronze bushing and the oil seal. It'll come out.

Ah ok cool will have to see what I have in the garage I can use is it an easy thing to punch out or does it take some doing ?

I hammered the whole needle bearing out of mine to get the shaft out. I wanted to change all the bearings other than the ones in the upper housing.

The seal is holding the shaft in the case. I've always found that there is enough end play in the assembly that I can just pull sharply on the brake several times to "hammer" the seal out. Depending on the winch condition, though, that may not always be possible.
