Hi all,

I have a Belleview winch on my 40. It has never been wired right since I didn't have the original cables to go with it. I just had a wimpy 75 amp switch. Well, now I want to do things right. I went through the Tech link write up about the Belleview where he said "I used a single $6 Ford starter switch for about 8 years with no problems. Knowing what I do know about electrical current, I would now hook two in parallel to distribute the current between them."

I'm not the best with wiring, so could someone please elaborate on this a little bit. How exactly would I wire this in parellel? I'm guessing (please correct me if I'm wrong) that I have 2 cables from my battery going to each solenoid, then wire both solenoids into 1 small amp switch to control. I would also have a cable from each solenoid to the winch. Does this sound correct? I attached a drawing of this in case my description is confusing. Any advice (beyond getting a different winch) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

That does show the switch and relay's in parallel, here is another version, but would take less heavy gauge wire. Don't forget to take into consideration if the motor goes into reverse you will need to swap the polarity.

I am betting this will help you! Picture from a Ramsy Winch setup. The black small wire is the power to the controller. The green and white smalls are the other two wires to the controller. Power in comes from that big fat wire coming out from under the bat box. Ground to the battery from the big black wire.

Parallel

Here is wiring diagram using the ubiquitous ford starter solenoids

This depicts parallel main power circuitry.
this is how mine is wired. winch.GIF

Have fun.. I just bought new cables for my brake and engagement
100.00 at local cable company

ok so question....i understand the above drawing but the 8274 i have can also be put into forward or reverse...I have a 3 way switch so if i wanted to be able to just use forward or reverse without having to get out and switch polarity, i would have to use 4 solenoids?

also in the pic the switch just terminates....should it be grounded or something or...?

Belview

that drawing is for a Belview that has power in only 1 direction.
the second solenoid is actually super over kill. it will give you redunancy if one fails..

But the truth of the matter is the ford starter (old school) Draws
300 amps momentarily at startup. far more than the belview will
tax it..

I use 2 cause I like overkill

Ps the left hand side of the switch goes to the +
I didnt draw it in..
