I have a right rear caliper that is suddenly making noise at low speeds when hot. The calipers in this 1994 80 Series have never been serviced beyond fluid flushes and new pads at 235k miles. The pads are new Akebono. When I replaced the pads I was aware the inside was 1-2mm thinner than the outside pad. The rubber caliper pin tube was torn and rotten (wrong pin grease?). I will probably remove the parking brake or fully retract it just to confirm it is the caliper making noise.

If it is the caliper, what is the course of action? Budget wise I can probably do:

- 2 New rear Toyota calipers @171ea. (new Fronts are $283ea.)
- 4 Remanufactured calipers front and rear via Ourisman Richmond at a net of under $130 plus some bits and pieces and shipping.

I have not touched the fronts yet other than to measure the rotors which are right on 32mm (new 5 years, 10k miles ago), but I need to do the hubs.

The car is going on to my daughter in Denver and I would like to pass it to her with some comfort the major systems are in good order for 2-3 years.

No leaking at the LPSV after squeezing the rubber. Brake booster holds a vacuum well. The grommet and vacuum line are new.

Pedal is softer than I like.

I have been reading and it seems like Toyota remanufactured calipers are a reasonable bet. And with those, I can probably replace the piston and grommets in the master cylinder as well.

This whole project began with a recommendation to replace the rubber brake lines, they are new Toyota lines. We have done all cooling, PS, trans, vacuum lines, harmonic balancer and a ton of relatively small while you are there stuff.

I am keeping a small reserve for a new EGR valve in my planning, which is why 4 new calipers seems out of reach.

Is it reasonable to focus on the remans at all four corners? Should I be optimistic and ignore the 30-year old fronts?

OEM remans on all 4 corners.
Replace all 7 soft brake lines with OEM.
OEM pads on all 4 corners.
New OEM rotors on all 4 corners. Good time to service wheel bearings and inspect EVERYTHING.

Toyota soft lines were "first" project. Rotors are all Toyota, rear are new front have 10k miles on them. I have wheel bearing kit ready to go......So, my only point of departure is the Akebono pads.

What hardware comes with the remans? Do I need to order slide pins, clips, bleeders, rubber bits?

I have a "cart" going on their parts site, I know I need the copper crush washers, the banjo bolts are 2 months old so I plan on reusing.

Do I replace piston in MC "while I am there"?

Thanks

Jon's correct, you need all that. Every year ;)

My personal opinion is that you can put any pads you want on the front, but if you use anything but Toyota pads on the rear, they won't well. As in, they won't fit in the calipers, or if they do, they'll irritate the hell out of you until you replace them with Toyota pads.

I assume you mean the piston in the caliper and not the master cylinder piston (on the firewall)? You shouldn't need to replace the caliper piston, unless it's been sitting for awhile. Even with a torn boot, they resist rust pretty well. If it is rusted at all, replace it. You won't know that until you tear it down of rebuild, but swapping new calipers is way easier, although it's stupidly expensive now. Ourisman's online price is

...and I assume that is rebuilt. The rebuild kit is

I know which I would pick.

BTW, these come with a smidge of grease. I throw that away. I have this:

(also Ourisman's price)

Your dealer will have it.

Ha! That pink grease has been a staple of this project! It never takes too much, but....

So mentally, I am thinking of the remanufactured calipers all around. The rear R&R kit is within my comfort zone, fronts would be a challenge. The remans are around $83-87 per corner with a $60 core refund. I can swing the rear pads and hardware. If there is a quality concern about the remans, I will concentrate on an R&R of the rear. The rust I see on the piston is on the pad contact surface and the hollow inside area. I assume this is okay and it is really the outside cylinder surface that is the issue.

I was thinking of the master cylinder at the firewall. I see no sign of a leak at the bottom but simply thinking in terms of "It is 30 year old rubber."

Yes, you are correct about the caliper pistons; the only surface that matters is the outer circumference. FWIW, if you can rebuild the rear, you can rebuild the front. Same process, one more piston. You do not split the caliper halves.

You can rebuild the master, there's a kit:

...and you need the rear gasket:

BTW, I don't make any money from Ourisman or PartSouq; they're just handiest at the moment.

Unless you're in a great hurry, like you want this stuff next week, I'd send Dave Stedman an email. He'll beat all these prices, even with shipping.

That's a page for a '95, but the brakes are the same for 2nd/3rd generation 80s.

Yes it is 47265 in the diagram....can't find a full part number. Just checked to see if it appears on the Booster diagram - no luck.

Sounds like I need to introduce my self to Mr. Stedman.

It's somewhere else. Maybe Onur will chime in and help out.

Or, you can introduce yourself to all the pages in the catalog ;)

Ourisman Toyota is selling OEM reman front calipers for $27.
47730-60060-84
47750-60060-84

OEM reman Rear calipers for $63.
47730-60070-84
47750-60070-84

At these prices, I'd pick up 2 sets and keep one on the shelf.

If you want to rebuild anything yourself here, I did a very comprehensive write-up on everything here:

That said, the price jonhold found for those reman calipers is straight up bonkers. Buy some of those and swap them in.

Nice find. Will the front works for 96 LX450? Parts numbers for front caliper are slightly different.

OK, I'll bite, how did you find it?

I found 47265-20030 in one of the DIY's I was reading yesterday popped it into the Ourisman site and it came back saying 47265-20030 is not for my car but 47265-20050 is perhaps correct using the VIN. Luck not skill.

Ours has a 12/94 build date which worries me a bit as I have seen reference to a mid-year running change during 1994.

I am going to collect the car shortly and disable the parking brake to see if we can't isolate the problem to the caliper.
