Help… MY speedometer is not working.

I need help in fixing the speedometer on my stocked ’94 LC. I’ve look in previous post & threads and couldn’t find any relative info. Any help on how to replace/fix the speedometer would be appreciated.

might have to replace the speedo cable that goes into your transfercase
thanks for the help... is this a hard job to do>

Spedo Cable

This job is very easy, just did it my self. Take apart dash panel and cable routes through trans tunnel through clips under body and screws into transfer case. Took me about 2hrs.

I don't honestly know if the 94 FJ80's had gone to electronic spedo yet or not (many here will know that), but if it is cable drive, I also suspect broken cable. If it's electronic, it probably operates on a 4 pulse sine wave signal. You'll need to see if signal is in fact being generated and getting through???

Yea, the 94 FJ80 is electronic. i just called my local toyota dealer to price the sppedo cable, and they informed me that it's no a cable at all, but rather and electric sensor...

Anyone have an idea how to replace\fix one?

It could be one of three things.
1. The sensor that plugs into the transfer case has gone bad.
2. The speedometer in the cluster has gone bad.
3. The wiring between the two have gone bad.

I have had both 1 and 2 happen to my 94. First the transfer case sending unit went bad, then the speedo died about a year later. The most likely culprit is the sending unit on the transfer case. Pretty easy to change. Just one bolt and a plug. It is located on the drivers side of the transfer case towards the top of the rear of the case. I picked up a used one from cruiserparts.net for $30. I think a new one is over $200 from toyota. If you pull the codes from the truck, it will tell you which sensor went bad. If the code indicates the #1 speed sensor, you need a new speedo (actually a whole new cluster). If the code indicates the #2 speed sensor, you need a new sensor for the transfer case. Unfortunately, I don't remember what the codes are.

Good luck. :beer::beer:

Slim, tell us a bit about your truck. Is it a stock vehicle or built up? If built up, did you buy it that way?

Reason I am asking is someone added the speedometer calibration for larger tires and a wire came undone, it would cause the same thing. These typically tie in behind the glove box. Remove two screws on bottom hinge of glove box to remove.

Look at the IH8mud main page and click on woodys yellow box install write-up, that will show you were the wires are at that pont anyways.

It’s a stock green 94 LC. I've had the truck for 2 yrs; I bought it with 116K miles on it. It now has abt 128K. Just replaced the radiator, it went out, with a stock one. It's riding rough, so I want to upgrade the shocks/ suspension. Don't do any off-roading, so I don't need anything heavy duty. I wouldn't mine lifting it an 1.5" or 2" I'm pretty new to all this, so I'm glad I was able to find this forum...

Also check the fuse box for the guage fuse It's a 10A fuse and if this is blown, your speedometer (and other dash gauges) will not function.
