I think if someone approaches a person who isn't selling a vehicle and offers to buy it, they have to be prepared to pay the value of the vehicle, plus the persuasion price of convincing them to sell it. The potential buyer doesn't know you could use the money, of course. I would play the part of the disinterested seller, which you really are. And I would quote them a price, a high price, which you will feel really comfortable with. $15K sounds about right, unless you wouldn't take less. In that case, I'd start higher so you can negotiate a bit without sounding like a turd.
It really is a nice looking rig, in a good color combo, and locked. That's a sweet rig, far better than 90% of the ones I see on the street.

It's pretty evident that you take care of this vehicle and have lots of fun with it. I'd keep it.

That’s a nice looking truck, $11k is too low, it’s better to get rid of something and be an opportunist before you are forced to and have to take what you can get fast.

Always know how much you would sell for. Maybe you just need to have enough to buy another one and make it nicer than the old one. People might get mad at the price i would take for mine. That's on them though. I am not looking to give anyone the friend discount or provide it for charity. If someone needed help I would try to help them find a Corolla.

Agreed. We'll see how it goes, right? I might start at about 15k, but I'll have to figure out what my lowest is.

Agreed.

I will!

No, no. I've already been going over and over this in my head. This Cruiser is my BABY and has been a f***ing warhorse through the worst parts of my life, period.

I've been thinking over the last few months of selling, but only because I'm in a tough money spot and could use a newer/cheaper truck of some kind. Plus, this truck deserves someone with more time and cash than I can give right now.

BUT...finding another one in the type of condition it's in? Oh boy. HIGHLY unlikely. This will be a tough decision

I was looking at vehicles recently and decided newer and cheaper than an 80 series doesn't really exist. Late 90's Tacoma's and 4 runners are selling for around $10,000 for anything decent in my area. The only trucks I could find under $10,000 were all old and beat up. Even a 2005 4 runner with 190,000 miles sold for more than $15,000 a few months ago. You might as well keep the 80 and avoid stuff like new tires and baselining.
That being said if I were you I would list it for $20,000 and take offers. Decide what vehicle you want to replace the cruiser and only sell the cruiser if it will pay for the replacement

I'd take it for $11k! I'd say list it for $16.5 since it sounds sentimental. I'd also do anything in my (financial) power to keep it since prices seems to be holding very steady the last 6 months and even before COVID.

You will regret, it don't even bother the dude that wants to buy is going to think you don't know what you have

No worries, we got that out of the way quick. Told him this was my third Cruiser, knew what it was worth (well, not exactly, but close...).

He said he had actually owned an 80 series a few years ago, but sold it and wished he'd kept it. Could be a seriously good chance to get some cash out of this. Sounds like he's willing to pay. Again though...the hell of actually finding another triple locked 80 series with low miles? Probably not going to happen.

I might actually start the price higher than the 15k, even.

I am noticing that right now as well. 100 series? Way overpriced, stuck with that gas guzzling V8 (as opposed to the 80s gas guzzling I6, I guess...). 4 Runner? A bit better, but I'm not a huge fan. Only decent idea I had was another FJ Cruiser?

I actually don't know what I would drive, if I didn't drive this...

I think if you need cheep transportation you need to not be looking at Toyotas anyway. Sequoias are running cheaper than most for some reason maybe an older tundra and 2wd are the only cheep ones i see. But like mentioned before... you will have to baseline anything you get older or play the lottery.

If you need money and have some grownup man-toys then you know they are demanding top price and likely easier for you to replace later when things get better.

I noticed the same thing about Sequoias. I'm fairly sure I'm going to let him know I pass for the moment. I'm also selling my trailer right now, which should give me a bit of needed cash as well.

Decent and fj cruiser should never be used in the same sentence. Now, where is the snob emoji....?

With the current market due to Covid and decrease in supply chain, used cars are becoming harder to buy. If you don't already have a second vehicle or can't afford to go without the land cruiser for a long time while looking for a reasonable replacement (I can't think of a resonable replacement but maybe you can) than I would not sell it. You may get stuck having to pay a bit more than you want for a used vehicle and still be stuck fixing up a used vehicle with unknown problems. Keep the 80 and sell off other things.

Read & understand, and still vote for keeping it. Sell your soul, your body, or something else first!

No clue on actual value as there is not enough info. However looks like there is $800-$1200 worth of small stuff to fix not including paint.
With recent prices I'd say it's worth $16-30K depending on your records and how nice it is.
Keep in mind the guy from "The Land Cruiser Project" just sold his rust bucket with issues in the same color for $14K.

So assuming it has no rust and has records I'd say 18-24K.

I think about $1200 bucks worth of smaller stuff, not including the fender flares, is accurate. And I have some records. Mine, of course, and the guy before me who was good to it as well. But that only goes back probably 7 years, unfortunately.
