So, today I decided to replace my power steering pump on my FJ60 (thanks again beno for the new pump!) however I can't get the pulley loose. What am I doing wrong??? Old pump is still installed. Tried with the belt on and off, pulley just spins. Any gurus out there have some sage advice for me?
Update: pulley is still attached lol impact gun didn't get it. However, bracket is now loose and will be able to pull the assembly in the morning. The plan is to bring it to a buddy's shop once off and we will break out the big guns and get it apart there. Thank you to jdayment and Output Shaft for your words of wisdom. I'll post another update tomorrow. In the meantime if anyone else has any tips or tricks I always welcome them!
Update #2: Job complete! Removed bracket, loosened smog pump, then took assembly (power steering pump in bracket) to machine shop. Mounted bracket into vise and used impact gun to remove pulley(key was still intact!). Installed pulley on new pump attached to bracket and voila! Install was then simple as reverse of removal.
Unfortunately now I discovered a leaking tube that runs under radiator . Never ending project I guess.
you can cut out the rusted/leaking part of the power steering cooler pipe and replace with some correctly rated hose, did this 10+ years ago, no issues, cut out about 4"
i think. Of course not long before the leak I had replaced the radiator....so I cut out the pipe and replaced with rad on.
Or you can bypass the pipe and use small trany or PS cooler. It's the return side of PS so low presure.
Update #3: I have power steering! Added an aftermarket power steering cooler mounted between grill and radiator. Ten minute install and $17 at advance auto parts. Thank you everyone who reached out on here, you're the best resources ever! So happy!
