I got the tranny-tcase combo out and on the floor. I'm trying to get the output flange off the tcase (for the rear output) so I can start to split the case. The previous rebuild staked the stake nut in such a way that I can't get the stakes out enough to turn the nut. So after about an hour and half of pulling, bangin, chiseling out the stakes, etc., I still can't get the stake nut to budge.

Short of trying to split the nut in one area, does anyone have any ideas that will help get this nut off the output shaft? At this point, the nut is beyond being able to reuse, so destructive options are welcome as well, as long as I can avoid damaging the shaft.

Boy, am I glad that I didn't wait until the week of OTMT to do this!

Impact gun?

if you can't get a impact gun and socket over the nut I have used in the past an impact hammer witha chisel tip to budged the nut loose........ works like a charm

good luck

Thanks for the feedback guys! I will try that this evening, although, I did try a 4ft cheater and had the :princess: stand on the case while I "bounced" on the cheater to no avail. Impact will probably help. Also found a thread in the 60 forum mentioning dremeling the nut, might have to try that too.

Did you shake your fist at it?

...says the guy with absolutely no knowledge of how to fix a tcase. Sometimes the fix is much simpler than you think.:meh: I'm pretty sure impact would work a lot better than my suggestion though, so go with that.

When this has happened to me, I was able to drive a 6-point socket over the nut. The key was having the 'stakes' opened enough at the top of the nut so the socket would push the stakes away from the nut as it was driven on. I don't know if your access will permit this approach, but it has worked well for me. Also, I did not need to hammer hard enough to damage the socket or extension which was a nice bonus. Good luck.

Sounds interesting, but it in my case it would have to be a THIN walled socket to get between the shaft and the nut. I'll look and see when I get home. Thanks!

And the winner is...

Marshall! The impact gun worked, after a few minutes of pounding, the nut finally came off! :bounce:

Now, I've found the reason for the leak from the transmission and the transfer case. The seal is only partially installed from the previous rebuild (it was a business that rebuilt the tcase but I'm going to protect the guilty) and the bolt that is inside the tcase (not necessary for a H55, but necessary for a H41) is missing... Should be easy to find the parts and replace, I hope!

So, does anyone have a bolt for my transfer case? In particular, I am looking for the one that goes where the bolt in the picture is. Now, I know that the bolt in the pic is SAE, but I need the stock bolt. Thanks!

Forgot to follow up here... Ordered all parts from RHT and one stake nut is on backorder. The bolt in question was all of $0.40. Should be able to put some time into putting things back together tomorrow night. Does anyone know if I need a gasket/sealant on the middle bar of the transmission?

Question in my 60series post
