So I went to Cruising the Parkway today and my Piggie did very well...and it still runs well BUT I stopped to get gas north of TR and when I came to an idle my engine was making a new noise that has me worried. :o

Dan thinks it might just be my valves needing adjustment. The noise is a "tap tap tap" that gets faster w/ increasing rpms but the noise gets drone out by the motor pretty fast. I think its coming from my valves or maybe between the fan and motor...dunno. I tried the "wooden stethescope" technique and think the noise is coming from my valves but again I'm not sure.

Who can I pay off to come by and try and figure out whats wrong so I can order parts or figure out how to fix the problem before Pumpkin Pig Run??? My Piggie seems to run fine still from what I can tell so I can drive to someone's if they are close. I don't want to drive too far not knowing whats wrong. I'll owe someone BIG!!!!

uh oh......... i thought that was normal. i got the same tappity tap increasing w/ rpms on the F. I feel it is valves as well and had a neighbor listen and he agreed. wish we were closer, we could make it a dueling piggy wrench off. best of luck steve.

I blame your substitute driver today . . . .

:grinpimp:

I thought there was a tapping sound, and my thought was the valves simply needed adjusting. That would be where I would start, did it to my 3FE, and it made all the difference. (Previous owner thought it was "knocking" and used premium . . . .}:D

Do a search on setting valve lash on a 2F or go to your Haynes manual and attempt yourself - my Pop does this for me by sound (I'm deaf so doesn't work for me anymore) and it's actually really easy.

Do that - aaaaand double check your vacumm lines and do a compression check. Might be a burned valve or #4 going bad due to brake booster vacuum leak? Doubtful though.

Also might be some pinging due to bad timing - although that wouldn't just happen - make sure distributer hold down clamp didn't come loose.

Just a few thoughts.

Good luck.

Thanks guys. I'll try to figure out how to adjust my valves and check valve lash. The engine is still very strong so I hope a compression check isn't needed. My 2f is desmogged so shouldn't be a vacuum leak anywhere. Will check to see if anything is loose again.

Argh! I don't want to have to take this to a mechanic but its gotta be fixed by PPR!

take off the valve cover steve, start it up and listen....if you here the pinging then try to locate which rod is off and sloppin around on the rocker....then turn it off...set it to top dead center...adjust the valves.....do this in the correct order....and then start it back up.....you should not hear the pinging noise anymore.

Thanks Chuck - I'm off to Advance to get a gauge to measure my valve gap. I just started the Piggie up and she doesn't sound nearly as bad as she did last night. Maybe after a few miles it will get loud again (who knows). I did drive her most of the day yesterday - that could have pi$$ed her off a bit.

Might try and adjust the valves this afternoon - will be interesting! and

How olds yer oil? I assume a louder version of the sound you showed me and Alan at the meeting?

Oil probably has about 1000 miles if that on it.

Sound is MUCH louder than what I showed you and Alan at the annual meeting.

PO said the water pump might be going bad but the engine stays cool so coolant must be circulating.

It was changed on June 23. How do I know that so well you ask? Well, because I was the one that was wearing it when it shot out of the drain hole all over me, the driveway, and NOT into the pan that was under the damn truck.

In case you forgot.... :grinpimp:

ETA: I was wondering where all my shop towels went yesterday when I was scrambling to clean up coolant from hooking up my rear heater.

Hmmm Heather changes oil, now valve noise. Like Chuck said, pull the cover and see whats up.

I'm a  guy (working on :banana:) and I see this as a :banana: job with :banana::banana::banana: consequences. I'm thinking if I can make it to PPR on Thurs then I can get some help from Dan-O before we hit the trail. I don't think it would be very hard to adjust my valves but being that I've never cracked a motor before.....

Ha ha...funny guy!!!

And thanks for the picture resurection Juice, remind me to smack you the next time I see you.

Bring your feeler gauges and the manual so i know the tolerances...been a while since I wrenched on a tractor motor :)

No hate,

can't you feel the love, man? (still though . . . . Run, Steve, Run!):grinpimp:
