I purchased my Cruiser with 295 Hankook Dynapro MT's. Both offroad and highway performance of the tires was good and I really didn't have any complaints. They seemed to be wearing incredibly well for the first two years I had the truck. Now, I am noticing significant accelerated wear. One tire is wearing faster than the rest and there is cupping appearing on some of the others. There might be one or two that are also out of round causing a vibration in the truck. I've got to get rid of these tires sooner rather than later.

My plan is to step up to 17" wheels for a much larger selection of 35" or 37" tires. This is a third vehicle for us and I am considering giving up road performance for maximum traction offroad. BUT in reality, we drive this vehicle on the weekend and want to take it on some fairly long trips coming soon. I like the idea of a 35" AT tire that has civilized road manners but handles well offroad and trades off some mud performance.

There is a new class of tire that is becoming popular, the hybrid tire. It straddles the line between mud terrain and all terrain. These types of tires appeal to me the most and are affordable. I've done a ton of research and come up with a short list of the ones I like but I'm stuck on making a final decision.

My list:
Toyo Open Country R/T - Fairly new tire with limited reviews. It is tall and skinny with square edges, 45000 guarantee, and aggressive looks.

BFG KO2 - Legendary tire on the road and off road. Although new, it is receiving glowing reviews. This is an AT tire and mud traction might be a big challenge. I am not a fan of the tread pattern but it performs well in all conditions. Superior treadlife and rated for snow.

Cooper ST Maxx - Heavy but bulletproof carcass. Most aggressive hybrid tire with excellent road manners and treadlife. There have been reports of cracks near the wheel.

Nitto Trail Grappler - It's a heavy mud terrain but gets good reviews for its road manners, treadlife, and offroad performance.

Not of the list for various reasons: GY Duratrac and MTR, Exo Grappler, Cooper STT/STT Pro, and BFG KM2,

I put a set of Cooper ST Maxx 315-75-16s on my '97 2000 miles ago and am very happy with them. Best part is how quiet they are after going on after a set of 3 yr old BFG KM2s. Will try them out offroad next weekend. I had a set of Discoverer ST's years ago on an old Land Rover and they were surprisingly good offroad, the ST Maxx is basically an upgraded version of that tire.

I've had two sets of BFG ATs - - - hate how they collect rocks and throw them. Hate how they whine on the road. Love how they take forever to wear down :)

The DuraTracs on my truck are bad about holding rocks ... until I hit about 65

I have both 16" LC wheels and 17" Tundra wheels.

John Vee, I'm just like you and dropped everything I was doing to go see the Toyo MT's with "3000 miles" on them. That would have been the perfect set of tires to replace the Hankooks.

The ST Maxx is probably my #1 choice. Unfortunately my #2 choice are the rest of the tires and I can't seem to make up my mind.

BTW, the Duratracs often get called Duracraps and the thin sidewalls are notorious for collecting branches and roots.

What about the Toyo AT2's, in the Extreme design (with the deeper tread)? They seem to get glowing reviews as well and straddle that line between onroad compliance and offroad performance.

What is wrong with the KM2's? They wear out too quick for the high cost?

KM2's are just too expensive.

@DeeRex has a set of KO2s on his truck (the new BFGs) and he loves them IIRC.

I have a set on Dozer for "street" use. Really like them but hard to say since I still have less than 500 miles on them.

We are looking hard at the BFG KO2 for Heather's 80. Thinking the 34" size in 17" rim I just can not convince myself to run mud tires on it. Maybe a second wheeling set of mud tires.

I have cooper st maxx, couldn't tell the different in road nose between those and the stock ht's. No issues offroad other than they don't flex much even at 15 psi.

It was either the KM2s or st maxx, price is what lead me to lean on the coopers.

I have the bfg on my 40 and the nitto on my 60. Very pleased with both tires.i can't really say one is better than the other in any aspect

just go get the 37" KO2's and put them on the tundra rims, you know you want to.

you will thank me later.

ST8ROCKS, I didn't know that the ST Maxx doesn't flex much. Thick sidewalls explain their lack of flex, weight, and resistance to puncture. I've read great reviews on the Nitto Trail Grappler but I'm concerned about taking a 1000 mile trip with them.

The KO2's weren't even on my list until I saw them on Derek's Cruiser :).
