Cliff notes - these two wires behind each headlight. What are they? They are green/red and green/black on both driver and passenger side. The previous owner made a complete mess of everything he touched and he clearly cut these at some point.

Evening, guys. Long time listener, first time caller.

I am SUPER excited to finally be a part of this family. I bought a 1984 just this past Friday.

The brake/turn lights weren't working. I figured those out. It was just the brake light switch and some bad bulbs.

I'm working on getting the horns working now but I'm stuck. The ring behind the steering wheel wasn't making contact, so I cleaned that up and added some tiny washers in the mount. Then I found the previous owner had actually cut that wire before the connector there right under the steering wheel for some reason. I fixed that. Both prongs of the connectors on either side have a solid ground to it without pressing the horn. I understand the horn button connects the ground to complete the circuit so I don't know...I'm still working through that.

But there are these wires behind the headlights. I don't know what they are and it's bugging the crap out of me thinking they have something to do with the horns. Or maybe the high beams? My high beams also aren't working at the moment. Help?

They could route to anything. They aren’t original Toyota wires. Toyota doesn’t use butt crimp connectors

Maybe they powered some cheesy fog lamps the PO discarded a long time ago

Thanks for the reply.

It's clear the butt connectors aren't factory. Sorry, I assumed that would be clear. But the wires before the butt connectors sure seem factory. They're the exact same on both sides wrapped into the harness that (I think) goes into the firewall on both sides. I guess it's possible someone added them in and rewrapped the harnesses and all to make it look like it does. But idk, doesn't really seem likely.

...and it REALLY doesn't seem likely the previous owner added them to the harness and made it look all nice like it does (before the butt connectors) given how all of his other work looks

Best bet is to clean the wires well and note the colors. Then see if you can track them down in the wiring diagram.

They're green w/red and green w/black. I was trying to figure it out that way. I'll keep at it.

Any other insight is appreciated 👍

Ok, so...major facepalm moment here. The circled pairs of wires on both sides is the actual horn wiring. Lol. The wiring I THOUGHT was for the horns is actually the side marker wiring...I think. Either way, the pairs of wires I was asking to identify are for the horns. One wire of each pair had a constant 12v and the other went to ground when the horn button was pressed. I connected up some Hella horns I had and they're working now. I don't know how I got mixed up. Been tracing too many wires in this thing and confused myself I guess.

Anyways. Thanks for the input!!!

Green/black which you figured out is the hot wire also and also feeds the hazard switch and is supposed to be hot always ...as in w/out the ignition on. the Green/red feeds ground from the horns back to the horns switch on the column and then to ground once the horn switch is activated. Like much on the land cruiser it is negatively switched circuit. Interestly I found the colors of the wires to be different between the 83 electrical FSM and the 84 body and chassis manual. So sometime around 83 or early 84 the wire colors changed.

Here is the 83 electrical schematic:

Here are the color codes:
