Help: Front Bearing Retainer

Ooh, that's a sticky wicket. The E-85 H55 has a smaller input gear bearing & seal. That input gear is NLA. The new gear available now is the 86-newer gear w/ large bearing & large seal. The 86-newer transmission case and frt bearing retainer are changed to accomodate the larger front bearing (in the case) and the larger seal (in the bearing retainer).

I've run into this problem 2X. The first time it was solved by getting a used E-85 bearing retainer & input gear from a parted out 1985 HJ45 with H41. Second time it was solved by buying the new 86-later retainer & shaft from Toyota, then rebuilding the 85 H55 guts into a 1986 USA H42 tranny housing.

Edit: There is a post on 'mud somewhere about a 3rd way to fab a solution. Use a rare seal that is small OD but large ID, then use a rare bearing that is also small, early case, OD and large late model ID. last thing is to machine a shim ring to hold the bearing in position on the input gear.

Like me he has already located the input gear. He just wants the bearing retainer which is easy to find In the US.

1983 BJ40

A BJ40 would still be a four speed. Few markets that got a BJ40 after 7/80 had a four speed. Would be a BJ42. If you got the transfer case with it it will have a date code either on the back by the PTO opening or on top close to the transmission.

I should have just purchased a new H55F and put the 40 series top cover on it.

Why do you say that? I was pleased with the inside of my used H55F from a BJ42. Dealing directly with the seller off eBay AU I was able to get the driveshafts and skid plate which is rarer than the 40 series top cover. Even after buying the correct input shaft it was still cheaper than just a new H55F with a 60 series top cover.

The transmission and TC came from Norway. $1400.00 Plus delivery. Plus new input shaft. Plus $650.00 parts. Plus labor to rebuild both. @ $3000.00. plus delivery and pickup to/from the shop. AND I need a part that seems rarer that the 40 series top cover. It may have been a 42. The assembly is 5 hours away I can't check.

So your saying the rebuilds are costing $3K plus parts and shipping? I can see why buying new may have been a better option. Bringing enough parts a second one already set up for F/H engine made sense. This one will require grinding the face of the bellhousing and changing the output flanges since a later one with the 38MM idler shaft in the transfer case.
