HELP! My late husband did a frame off restoration of a 74 FJ40. A Weber carburetor was installed by a friend a while back. I have had nothing but issues with this carburetor. The car is running like Sh*t (constantly backfiring, no power, stalling etc) and I am being told the carburetor needs to be rebuilt and gas tank emptied as the gas is old/bad.

I don't want to put the Weber back on the vehicle but I don't know what to look for on-line to replace it with. I have been looking for the original carb that was on the vehicle but cannot find it. When I go on to eBay, there are sooo many carbs in all sorts of conditions. Some are <$100 which seems like you get what you pay for. What do I need to look for? What should I avoid? I have been reading posts and see that Aisin seem to be the most recommended but they are hard to find.

I welcome any thoughts and what my next steps should be. I am in Minneapolis ... so if there are any folks out there from this area I would love to connect as I am trying to learn how to take care of this car myself and not have to take it to the mechanic every time there is a problem and spend a fortune to fix stuff.

@Poser is about an hour from you in MN, and has been wrenching on Landcruisers for three decades. He has installed a few of my rebuilt carburetors on his customers’ rigs who have all been satisfied with them. I met one of them in South Dakota on a trail ride five years ago. Coincidentally, same color rig as yours.

Here’s some contact info:

I'm not a weber guy either. My 72 came with a Rochester 2bbl in 82. It has been a great carb. Back in the 90's I had to free up and grease the accelerator pump leather cup. I think there are china copies on Amoron for $100.

Bad gas will make anything run like crap. You can make an electric transfer fuel pump for like $50. Back in the 80's I did the alcohol resistant fuel tank liner program from JC Whitney to fix a seepy seam - still gas tight.

@Poser has good taste ;)

Thanks everyone for the support. I will check out these resources. @65swb45 I checked out your catalog. Do you have any carburetor's available?
I actually have two or 3 rebuilt 1974 carburetors on the shelf at the moment, along with the associated bits to install them (insulator and air cleaner). I do my business by telephone, and I am away from the phone until Monday. I will be happy to assist you then.

That would be great! I will connect with you on Monday. I will call you...I have a 715 area code

backfiring through carb? Did you double check the timing?

Webers can work good
Webers can work great, I have two of them on my 49 Power Wagon flat head 6 and run as smooth as can be. Running Holley Sniper on my FJ.

And valves mal-adjusted …

You will likely need a carb isolator/heat shield and an oem air cleaner as well if you go OEM.
All of a sudden it gets expensive to replace the carb just to find out it was something as simple as baselining.

I’d say hang on to the weber and work through all the other potential issues first. It all probably needs to be done anyway.

Consider ditching the points for a Pertronix and flame thrower.

New wires, plugs, fuel filter, gas dump/tank flush.

Do you know which weber you have? 32/36 or 38/38?

I will check tomorrow to see which Weber I have. I did take it to mechanic that works with older cars and he recommneded getting rid of the old gas in the tank (which I did today),new oil filter and he said the carburetor needed to be rebuilt. So this is how I go here.

I appreciate all the feedback and am learning a lot by your comments and suggestions (doing quite bit of research now ). But at the same time, it is a bit overwhelming.

Not everyone is up to doing carb work. Adjusting valves, setting timing is easy enough. Do you have any car people you can ask for help. There are youtube vids on almost anything - some are way better than other.

@fj40BumbleBee not that other vendors can’t help you but for now at least I would put my faith AND trust in Mark @65swb45. He has already suggested he will help you, he will absolutely have the parts you will need.

We on MUD have a bunch of people you can trust…he is one.👍

First, I agree with @John McVicker ; be guided by @65swb45 . Second, I applaud your taking this Land Cruiser and using it. Not sure if it was re-built for you or you just jumped into the drivers seat when the time came but…I think it’s great. The guys and girls here are always ready to lend a helpful thought or suggestion. I would believe it can be a tidal wave of reaction with so many ideas being floated about what the problem may be.

Back in 1975 my wife and I had the same kind of problem on our way back to Vermont on the New York Northway at -20 below F and it was a simple clogged fuel filter. Wishing you luck. Welcome
