HELP! AHC Pump Issue After Reservoir Drain/Refill (1 Viewer)

Pretty sure I found my culprit...
I cleaned the pump and it is/was operating as it should. Awesome! So I re-installed the pump/reservoir and began refilling the reservoir, but this time WITH THE FILTER.
Then I noticed this moving through the tube...

So I stopped and pulled the filter in the filler neck. It was filthy with some kind of jelly-like substance. I cleaned the filter (see clean filter pic below) and started refilling the reservoir again. After what was maybe less than a cup of fluid I pulled the filter again (see nasty filter pic).

Poured what was left of the bottle into an empty water bottle.

This was from a brand new sealed AHC bottle purchased from a Toyota dealership.

Not sure where to go from here. The filter in the filler neck seems to be filtering this crap out but I'm not sure if I want to put another bottle of this in my reservoir (right now it's lower than max)
Do you still have your old AHC fluid? If so, you can use it to fill the rest of the reservoir up and not use this "bad" batch of AHC fluid. That way you can still drive the vehicle without being on the bump stop. I did not have the jelly like substance building up in my filler neck filter.

Unfortunately I don't, I already mixed it with my oil to be recycled.

I'm pretty sure I can filter this stuff out. As in, filter this AHC bottle into a clean bottle and then use that fluid. But honestly I'm so freaking mad at Toyota right now I want to drain this last bottle I have on their service desk and show them what they're selling their customers

I would be mad too. Probably post or contact Toyota corporate and inform them of the AHC fluid issue so they take responsibility.

I was going to dump my old AHC fluid at the local Autozone. It has been sitting in my garage for over a month. Not sure what the USPS shipping regulations are with ground shipping hydraulic oil but if you want these older AHC fluids for free, DM me.

I’ve reached out to @ranma21 to see if he still has 2.5L metal cans. He’s a supporting vendor and had a lot of them on had when I flushed my fluid.

@runnerxa @Wes Gardner

Nice work, that's the same jelly-like junk that clogged mine up. My errors in re-assembly you corrected with patience 🍻

@runnerxa did you clean the third filter? It's under the large hex on the bottom of the pump housing, the filter itself is rather hard to get to.

I have mine saved in glass - the bottom 1/3 is super cloudy and I'll be taking it to the service counter. I replied to my standing email chain and they've gone dark after more problems are popping up.

When I filled the reservoir I grabbed a funnel that you can modulate the flow with, put a fine mesh metal coffee filter in the top [fit right in] and then ran the fluid through.

Bummer is - good luck cleaning the filler neck filter, I used these to good effect though - just need to be careful of the ends.

Are you referring to this one (circled in the attached photo)? If so, yes. Not sure what that actually does, it is plugged with the hex bolt and goes no where.

Will low pressure air work in cleaning the filler neck filter (without damaging it)?

I gave that a shot but the debris was a bit too gummy. I used degreaser and the brushes I linked. The jelly really reminds me of plasticizer.

I turned the filter upside down and shot it with MAF cleaner, that did the trick.

I sent him a message asking the same a couple days ago. Those cans he has or had were the old stock # btw.

Yes, old stock and probably worth gold now 😂

Gonna hold on to those metal cans of fluid I have in the garage for a bit…

And also, holy crap. Would have never thought that bad fluid would ever be an issue. I attributed the spike in issues to more folks buying LXs as the prices on pre-2015s fell.

That is so messed up.
Filtering AHC fluid has been evaluated before (if I recall in conjunction with the fluid that ships in new AHC shocks). It was over on the 100 forum a couple years back, in an archived thread if I recall. Wish I could remember the filter media used..z

Glad this is being figured out, but feel bad for those of you who have been very impacted by Toyota and Idemitsu Kosan's lack of awareness and oversight into this one particular product. I can't imagine the frustration. Stating the obvious, but there are large amounts of time and money spent creating processes that are put into place to avoid things exactly like this. Someone along the way really screwed up. I hope Toyota holds them accountable. I also hope Toyota does the right thing, identifies the bad batch(es) accurately, and communicates this to the dealers they have sold it to. In a perfect world the dealer would identify what customers this fluid was either used on, or sold to, but we all know that is never happening.

So I guess now we have to inspect and perhaps filter each bottle before using it, at a minimum.

This morning I took the one remaining bottle of fluid I had back to the Toyota dealership I had purchased it from and explained the situation to the parts and service managers. They were both floored, very apologetic and said they had never heard of such a thing. They refunded me the full amount I paid for all the bottles and asked that I send them each the pictures I took. They said they would send those pictures along with their remaining stock of AHC fluid back to Gulf States Toyota (distribution center?) and it would be handled from there. They both seemed sincere so hopefully that issue will get resolved on their end.

I still needed more fluid though so I went to another Toyota dealership and gave the parts manager there the short version. He told me that he had heard of old fluid gelling up like that... not sure if it's true but he said their fluid had only been on the shelf for 2 weeks so it was pretty new. I bought 5 bottles and told him I would crack one and if I found any gel in it I'd be returning them all and of course he understood completely.

So now I'm starting all over again!

I want to sincerely thank EVERYONE who has responded to this thread. I honestly would've been totally lost with y'alls advise. If we meet, beers are on me

Yep I remember seeing this post back in July. I brought my AHC fluids back in early June 2021 from my local Toyota dealership and when I poured it through the neck filter, I didn't have the gel looking stuff building up in the filter. They told me it is the last 5 bottles that they have and will need to restock after I purchase them. I think I got lucky and got them before the bad batch got shipped.
I hate to see that my original post with those concerns now appears to be validated. I know many questioned what I was told, and I had my own suspicions initially, but given the nature of my discussion with the local service manage while reading the "stop use" Lexus HQ email off his phone, I realized he was being truthful. I mean I just couldn't imagine that many different techs, at that many different dealers, could create the same AHC issues over and over again all of a sudden - where there wasn't an issue prior to the new fluid batch. If the southern region service manager is aware, I feel like Lexus has to be aware at this point also. The fact they are still selling the fluid is just INSANE to me!
