Hello- new BJ42 owner- Australia.

Matt mate- not much good when you leave your mobile off... ;) (yep, just tried to call you- joke or not- I was not about to miss a chance to talk about mah new baby!:D) might give you a call tomorrow once I try to get it started again and the sun comes up.

Was on charge, and I was sleeping, working tonight :D

If you need a hand call after 3pm tomorrow. Yep I have a heater blower :D

Posting as I decode. KCQ- K=4 speed, C=swing out ambulance doors, Q=intended for Australian market, 532='Yellow' (1982') H41= transmission (1st- 4.925, 2nd- 2.643, 3rd- 1.519, 4th- 1.000, reverse- 4.925, TFR LW(?)- 1.992, TFR Splines- 16) A11= manufactured at Honsya Plant. RV-KCQ= 3B 80'-82'.......... with this last code- the paint code- and the date I found stamped on the engine plate (1982') it would appear that this might just be a 1982- not 1984' ;).... interesting.

Thanks Sparkplug- honestly I don't know if it has the dash or not, but I don't thinks so... that'll all be part of the surprise...
It doesn't have roll-bars.

Jabxyz, thanks- yeah, I've been following your thread- I like your truck a lot and didn't even mind the black roof in the photos- but white will be real nice too. The PO of mine said the next thing he was going to do was to repaint the roof- so I will be following your progress- as mine may be needing it soon too.
As I also own big old sailboat- I have done a lot of reading on various painting methods over the years- there is one Aussie in particular I will be asking for advice on the matter. If you can, having a chat to someone who paints dedicated racing sailboats (and paints them well) will be well worth the time. Not only do they have the skills and get paid for the time to make things LOOK perfect- it doesn't need to just look perfect- it IS perfect- for performance and competition- curves need to be perfect and fair and sufaces mirror smooth. They have the techniques (learnable) and know the products to work marvels with fiberglass and paint.
I just tried to look up a link to send you of the painter I know in question, but all his photos have disapeared with the fall of phototrail (or one of the photo hosting sites).
If I find some info I will send it on.

Hans.

Hans,
Many thanks for the thought. Please send the link my way when it's back up. Oddly enough the black roof is starting to grow on me so now undecided but either way black or white it needs to be refinished and to shine!!! Congrats again on the truck and can't wait for the link.

Your rear side windows are correct for a non-LX. The pop-outs came from 77-84, except on LX's, which had the sliders.

Any luck getting her started?

Cheers,

Josh

no luck starting yet.
Charged the battery all night- but still no good-
dropped it up to my local tyre-battery place to check and charge- this arvo it was still at the same charge so I went and bought a new one... 700CCA
got it home and while it turned over- it struggled to do so. Still no starting- charging this new battery overnight to try in the morning again- and will call up my battery place to see if I can swap it for a higher CCA.
I am not sure what is happening yet.
It drove on to the truck- doesn't want to drive now it is off it... it turns over as if the battery is nearly flat- just barely. The PO is swearing that this has never happened before...
anyway- some photos.

I like the James Squires HOP THIEF but it's not available at the moment so that will suffice :D I'll be round for one soon.

But what you really need is one of these.

Nice!:) And thanks for all the photos.

The PO has stolen your heater-blower from the engine firewall and a lot of that wiring looks very dodgy. I'm sure Matt will be able to sort out parts for you though (like the blower) - So no worries there.

700CCA should be ample cranking power from your battery though. That's what I use and I had to enlarge my battery tray to be able to fit a battery that large!

Check your connections. Diesels need a LOT of starter motor current so everything must be in top condition.

So, morning and a freshly re-charged NEW 700CCA battery-
won't turn over-
I give it power and the starter motor makes that 'click' and does nothing.
This actually started happening not long after I put in the new battery last night- it just managed to turn over a half dozen times- and then stopped turning over and only did the 'click' thing- I thought maybe the charge in the battery wasn't good enough- now that appears not to be the case.

This used to happen on my van when the terminal connections weren't in top order- so I got out the sand paper and cleaned up all my battery side connections-
still the same 'click' and nothing.
The cable going to the starter appears to be ok from the starter motor end...
Not sure what else to actually look for on it...
Is my starter motor cactus...?
anyway- I got tons of other s*** to get done today-

Cheers Lostmarbles- yeah we can firmly attribute all that totally dodgey mess of 'wiring' to the PO- but I think the blower removal goes back to the PPO or more

Matt- I am waiting for a call back from my battery place now- he is calling his supplier and seeing if there is anything larger he can get in- but being a humble beaurepaires- he doubts his current suppliers have anything larger than 700CCA on offer.. another 'fresher' battery is on offer deliver straight from the supplier tomorrow- which I will take if I can't get anything bigger.

More later...
Hans.

hi Hans,

thanks for the pics and it looks like you've got yourself a pretty tidy BJ! Well Done!

In regards to your starting woes.. heres somethings you might want to check:
1) being a diesel it will need to "glow". this means on some, turning the key to the "on" position for 5-10secs (you might hear some relay's click during this time).. this will heat up the glow plugs ready to start.
I have had people flatten my battery because they didnt do this and come back to pick up my 40 to find them trying to jump start it.. patince. Some have what is called a "wilson" switch (search in the diesel section) which allows you to press a button instead of relying on the timer/relays when starting.

2) make sure your cables and terminals are GOOD AND TIGHT! The issue you have of "Clicks" when starting, I have seen before when my battery has been flat. IF you are unsure of the battery, make the place you bought it do a "AMPS TEST". I had a battery that would hold 12v but didnt have the amps to start the 40. Being a new battery you'd assume this is ok.
Check connectors on the battery and to the starter. Check your Earths from the battery and from the engine to the chassis exist and are good.
Check the cable to the starter is all secured. Ensure battery terminals are TIGHT! (ive had issues and tightend up the terminal on the battery 1/2 turn and it fixed it)

3) check the EDIC is getting power. The EDIC is a motor that is actuated when you start and turn off the car. It povides fuel to the injector pump. If this motor isn't working then when you crank, there is no fuel to ignite. You will someone to start the 40 for you for this. You stand next to the snorkle and look under the pipe to the intake, about halfway down the block is the edic, it has an arm (lenght of rod) to the injector pump. When the car is started and cranking, this arm should move (it should move to the rear of the engine bay)..

If there is no movement here then your engine is not getting fuel.

4) Glow plug relays and fusible links. When you "GLOW" your car is sends about 7v to the glow plugs. If the glow plug relays don't do their job, then the glow plugs wont work, and you can crank the engine over but it wont catch. These glow plug relays are usually connected to the battery with Fusible links, these are bits of wires that can fry if they get too much current (safety feature). IF these fusible links are blown, then the relay wont run, meaning you wont glow, meaning you wont start. They usually hang off the +ve terminal on the battery and look like a wire with a cloth sheath.

with all the wiring for the stereo, i'd get a multimeter and start figuring out what goes where.. ih8mud and manuals are a good place to start.

Prior to owning my 40 i had no mechanical experience.. now I can change heaps of stuff over.. read read read and read more!.. check for the appropriate manual in either the 40 section or the diesel section. I know i have pdf manuals for the 3B and a matching wiring diagram.

Also I would recommend you get MAx Ellery Workshop Manual for the 3B (also has 2H). this is invaluable and should be kept in the 40 at all times!!

If you need any other help with this I'd be more than happy to help and have pm'd you my mobile #.

Good luck and congrat!!

Andrew

Edit: Manual links for you:
http://www.phat42.com/files/bj42_wiringdiagram.pdf 500kb
http://www.phat42.com/files/3B_Engine_Manual.pdf 360mb

I got my manual from here: Drysdale Auto Books On-line Store - Automotive Books, Manuals, Magazines, Videos, and more ... Cars, Motocycles, Trucks, Tractors but notice they dont have the manual for the 3b on their online store, maybe worth a call to get it in. (search for max ellery landcruiser)

Also.. now you've got your BJ42.. time to sign up to PHAT42!!! (Gallery of Phat 42's for your own free image hosting).

Thanks for the post and links Andrew-
I gotta run out the door now but will follow them up more closely tonight.
I've got a few big pdf manuals that have just finished downloading, but am not sure what I got yet- again will figure it out tonight.

Thanks heaps- I'll be back later,
Hans.

When I had a problem like this and the battery checked out OK I pulled the starter out and took it apart. The brushes were fine but the bearings were baffed. I replaced them and the starter is still working fine 25 years later.

G'day BeeJay,

Some interesting things from your photos: Your front doors are from a '75 or earlier 40 series. Nothing wrong with them, they are heavier, and they are very simple to work on. If you ever need a regulator, though, you will need to get bits for an older one.

Your front seats appear to be out of an LX.

The plugs on your bulkhead seem to indicate that it had air con at one time. I think you also had heat at one time, but someone must have 'borrowed' it. This is an easy thing to install, though. Just find a heater unit out of a 79-84 40 series, and Bob's your uncle.

Hope you get 'er started.

Cheers,
Josh

Top pics beejay42 top looking 40 i'm driving down to melbourn in a month to pick up a fj 40 i,m from down there too it will be getting stored at matts place till i can pick it up cant wait to get it either :)

anyway top thread i'll keep an eye on it

cheers
chris

nice 42 there mate.

Matt's a top bloke, wish he was living closer (no i don't, i'd spend too much at the mini wreckers).

I'm surprised halls told you to try a 60 series 5 speed. it won't work. you need a 5 speed from behind a B series motor, because the input shaft is different on the gearbox.

as for starting, did you try jumping straight from the battery +ve to the big terminal on the starter, and the -'ve on the battery to a cleaned up section of the body of the starter with jumper cables? good way to tell if your cables are dead.

don't forget to glow plug it.

33's are supposed to fit that easily. 35's can fit on stock height too. you shouldn't see too many roadworthy issues with that one, it looks schmick. one drama is that you'll need the complete heater box/blower for roadworthy (demister)...

Thanks Josh, Chris, and Bad_relig..

Great info Josh-
I love my LX seats-
about seats- a couple of days ago I picked up a second hand seat for the back- it was from a lovely old guy- also called Hans (pretty rare around here) who had had BJ40's for many years and gone round australia a few times in them- he had just sold one of his two to Perth- and the buyer didn't want the seat in the back. It is a custom made fold and tumble- very well made- fits perfectly, the fabric is in great order- just need to get some vinyl reapolstered on the back.
Of course with my speaker box in the back, the seat is going to have to go a bit more forward than I would have liked (for head room)- but I'll be putting that in after road worthying it anyway.

About my doors- bugger of a thing is that between brisbane and melbourne someone has screwed the drivers side window winder- I am picturing the delivery people winding down the window to reverse it or something... anyway the window had come off its rail- and they have obviously just kept forcing it and stripped off a couple of cogs from the handle winder...
I had asked Matt already if he has them- but I imagine he was thinking this was still 84' doors. (in fact the truck is an 82- not an 84 like I first thought).

Chris- never know- I might just get to have a looksi at your FJ if I make it round to Matts mini wreckers when it is there.

Bad_religion
I have given up on the idea of a 5-speed for a long time... I was being totally naive about the costs involved... no harm, I will have enough tinkering to keep me busy for a long time yet.
I'm onto the heater thing- already got one from Matt, and have stripped it all back and repainted most of it- and cleaned out the radiator- next I need to get the blower and all the plastic ducting.
Window washing tub will probably go in this weekend- as the mount has been stripped and repainted today.

about starting, well, thats next post...

So,
my local beaurepairs were nice enough to get a fresh from the supplier replacement battery couriered in this morning- just incase the one I bought off them was a little old...
new battery- no difference.

With my girlfriend trying to start it an me climbing under- I mangage to notice that the click noise I was hearing was not coming from the starter- but was just the relays. The starter was doing nothing.

I checked and rechecked and cleaned up the connections- the earths,
gave the starter a few whacks with a hammer...

nothing-
so, I pulled the starter motor off.

The gear thingy(:D)(can you tell I am not much of a mechanical wizz) was free and working like I thought it should- and everything looked fine...
so I started pulling it apart...
first thing I noticed was a couple loose blobs of solder- just freely rattling around- so I pulled of the other end of the thingy (:D)
and presto
IMGP2590.jpg

IMGP2592.jpg

IMGP2591.jpg

two of the copper wires for the bushes had been really dodgily soldered on- and had come loose. Maybe they were knocked loose in transport- maybe they were already loose and just touching- and finally melted out for me... as they were loose but touching- this would have given me my struggling weak as piss turning over (probably sparking at the same time and melting the solder...)
Either way, it seems the problem is located.
Aside from being a bit black and grimy- everything else in the starter motor looked pretty good (at least as far as i got into it)- bearngs are fine- bushes to my untrained eye look pretty good...

Unfortunately it was 3:45 by the time I figured it out- so too late to get any local auto elecs to solder it up for me (I called around and tried).
Long weekend- so will drop it in monday for a proper fix up (rather than trying to bodge it myself- or getting my Jewler girlfriend to have a go:D)

Anyway- thats it for the moment.
Thanks for all the help and advice fella's.
Maybe monday afternoon I will be able to start it up.

Hans.

Plastic ducting seems to be in high demand:D

I have a few contacts :grinpimp:

Soon have you :steer:

Not sure if they are the same but I have a 2F starter here.
