Hello- new BJ42 owner- Australia.

Thanks Philclimp, and welcome. Yeah- bloody shipping... we (the public) used to be able to just put stuff on the trains- cars, cheap freight... now only the big companies can do it. My truck is probably coming down on the train but they won't admit it- they prefer to pretend it is coming on a big semi trailer... Fingers crossed they are not going to give me grief for one Big Horn ratchet strapped down in the back instead of attatched to the wheel carrier- and a couple of spare parts and paperwork wrapped up and hidden under the seat... I'll see how I go without a heater.. I am used to driving a 74' transit van, no heat (removed by a PO for straight six install) , no air con (sliding doors), drum 'brakes' all around, no power steering (keeps my arms strong while the beer belly grows lol)... so even a 24 yr old BJ42 is a couple of steps up in technology:D It gets cold here, but not that cold. The main thing I would need a heater for is for defrost when it is wet. And, I would probably prefer air-con that heat anyway. I am so curious to start figuring out the story with mine. What size tires are you running? To be practical I need to be looking more along the lines of cruising at or above 60 miles-ph so I can flow with the traffic a little better- 100-110Km speed limit here (62-68 miles). Mines got 33's on it, (and the split rims are something like 31-2) which the PO says keeps it at highway speed. We'll see. BTW, Philclimp, got any photos of your ride?

my bad.. its matt.mcinnes

Someone mention my name :D

Hi and welcome to Mud :flipoff2:

Now I have in my shed a washer bottle and motor as well as a 2 heaters complete, a 5 Speed a 4 speed.

Yep it's Matt's mini wreckers :D

PM sent

Hmmmmm 5 speed really need to chat about this before you spend large.

Also have a number for windscreens $135 I think my last one was, but been a while. mobile service he comes to you too, worth a call even just for a price.
A-Z windscreens 0418 560 956

Matt

Thanks a lot Matt
will see you this arv.
That windscreen number is great- the cheapest I've found so far was $175 delivered and fitted.

Brazil would be LHD, so unlikely to be from there. If it was an import, I would think Japan. Likely it is from another state and was 'imported' to QLD. Easy to veryfy: take your VIN number to the rego guys and ask them wht the year of first rego was.

As for the 5 speed: you need to be looking for a BJ70 or 73 for the most likely source. I have helped ship most 40 series parts I can find to the US, and there are not too many left to source your gear box from. You will shorten the rear drive shaft approx. 2.5", so it is not a big deal.

What you are after is the top loader from a 40 series, which you can still order from the dealer. The reason for this is that the top loader for a 60/70 series is 2 3/4" further aft (thus the hole in the floor would have to be moved for the shifter). This is not a requirement, just a nicety if you want the shifter to come out the factory hole.

As for your tyre carrier- too easy. What you are after is '76-80 for slight modification or 81-84 for direct bolt-on. You ought to be able to get all that you want from the wreckers. A better option is to get a nice tyre rack from the US (Specter Off Road www.sor.com ) which holds the tyre and an Esky/ petrol can.

As for the wipers, yes, the 3 wipers are only on LX series. I love my LX, and put an LX windscreen on my HJ47 as well to get the 3 wipers. This is an easy re-fit, but it is hard to find the windscreens. I have sent several to the US for the many RHD Cruisers there, but they are not readily available here any longer.

Air con: easy enough. Just need to get the under-dash unit from one with air con, and then get all the under-bonnet air con bits off of a BJ70/73. You can buy a condensor which fits in front of your radiator (remember that your rad is 1 1/4" wider than the pre'81 40 series is, so don't order a condensor without specifying the year).

Enjoy the new rig.

Cheers,

Josh

My shed has more space now and Hans knows what it means to be a true Cruiser nut :D

Great to meet you look forward to your BJ's arrival

Matt

Thanks for all the info Josh- very helpful.

And thanks again Matt- for the parts, the (excellent) beers, and a great arvo.

Indeed I have seen what it means to be a a True Cruiser Nut- for those that have not had the pleasure of meeting Matt- the force is strong in this one:D

now, back to the waiting game. 1 week to go:crybaby:

Hans.

BeeJay 42, if you would like a rear wheel carrier drop around to my place and pick it up no charge...
I live in mitcham also.. give me a call...0412617506...

Cheers Gaz....3rd Rock member....

Hey, thanks Gaz that sounds great- and very generous of you -
what year is the carrier off? ie will it bolt straight on?
Cheers, Hans.

Welcome, and nice cruiser. Does it have a dash pad? I have seen a few BJ-42s with 4 speed and 2 windshield wipers but they didn't come with dash pads or roll bars. Talk about bringing sand to the beach by importing it into Australia, but I guess lots of Aussie rigs are now in the U.S. now or so it seems.

Hi, congrats I just got my 1980 BJ40 last week, now I don't feel like the new kid in school anymore seriously best of luck

Thanks Sparkplug- honestly I don't know if it has the dash or not, but I don't thinks so... that'll all be part of the surprise...
It doesn't have roll-bars.

Jabxyz, thanks- yeah, I've been following your thread- I like your truck a lot and didn't even mind the black roof in the photos- but white will be real nice too. The PO of mine said the next thing he was going to do was to repaint the roof- so I will be following your progress- as mine may be needing it soon too.
As I also own big old sailboat- I have done a lot of reading on various painting methods over the years- there is one Aussie in particular I will be asking for advice on the matter. If you can, having a chat to someone who paints dedicated racing sailboats (and paints them well) will be well worth the time. Not only do they have the skills and get paid for the time to make things LOOK perfect- it doesn't need to just look perfect- it IS perfect- for performance and competition- curves need to be perfect and fair and sufaces mirror smooth. They have the techniques (learnable) and know the products to work marvels with fiberglass and paint.
I just tried to look up a link to send you of the painter I know in question, but all his photos have disapeared with the fall of phototrail (or one of the photo hosting sites).
If I find some info I will send it on.

Hans.

Hans, I dont know what year its off, I picked it up at he 4x4 swap meet a couple of years ago but it was a different bolt pattern to my old origional '73 one so its just been sitting there since.... If its not too far out of your way you could drop in and try it...It is the later bent bar type...

I'll be home on the weekend as we are having a club meeting and booze up in my shed sat night...

12 hours to go- I hope.
I have a s***e-load to do tomorrow,
big presentation at Uni that I will be staying up most of the night preparing for,
then hopefully the truck delivery around midday before I have to race into Uni, then I have to race home straight after a night class to meet someone who wants to buy my van.
Providiing it does actually turn up tomorrow on time- I still won't have time to play with it until late tomorrow night and tuesday- its gonna do my head in sittin in here typing and reading away while my new baby sits un-attended and ignored in my parking spot...

anyway, the wheels beat the truck and arrived on friday night, so I have a stack of 6 (7.50 r16 LT) desert duelers sitting out the front. I am glad I forked out the money to freight them down as rims and rubber they are in pretty good nick and have a lot of life left in them- plus they are quite a bit bigger than I thought they were going to be.

anyway... patience I keep telling myself... patience...

FFFRAARRRK!

I like your idea to use the image from the cover of an owner's manual for your Avatar Beejay42.

Took me a while to recognise where it came from.

PS. My owner's manual (no doubt older) doesn't have that "other" vehicle alongside.

congrats on the truck, very nice catch.

it's definitly not a pure 84 BJ, rear windows and front doors go back to pre 78 models and i think the truck is lifted, maybe 2 inches?

one more thing, once you get to drive it, can you tell me how the maxxis tires do? i've created a thread once before asking about maxxis tires experiences.

ENJOY IT

ITS HERE!

ahh...
only problem- it wouldn't start... LOL.
It drove onto the truck, and wouldn't drive off...
The transporters tried to jump it- but couldn't get it to turn over- mad coversations on the phone- arguing- they're telling me the starter motor is stuffed- I am asking them if the battery has a charge...
it gets too me and all sorts of wires are loose on the battery...
pulled the battery out tonight and it is dead- so will charge it all night and see what happens in the morning...

anyway- aside from that little insignificant point...:D

I'M IN LOVE... hahaha
This truck is in fantastic condition-
lots of photos will be coming up tomorrow arvo.
Its got the stripey brown LX seats in the front- in near-mint condition (did I mention how comfortable these are!), interior is beautifull, new roof lining, perfect rubber mats and carpets... body looks great... tyres and wheels are bad-ass...

as cruiserfreak said- I would be surprised if there is not some level of lift going on here... 33's aren't meant to fit like this are they?
rear windows open- pop out style- is that meant to happen?
anyway, I was too busy today to check it out properly (and totally fxxxed up my presentation today in part from all the time I had to spend stuffing around with the car not starting)- so having just got home have been sitting out there in the dark, with a beer one hand and a torch in the other checking things out...

oh yeah- and the lazy son-of-a-bitch who delivered it wouldn't even help me push it (downhill) into my driveway and parking spot- kept whining about OH&S laws- "I'm not allowed to push a car!"
left me in the street- unregistered- with no one to help... had to walk around and find a couple of blokes up the street and a neighbor to help me push it in.

Dinner now-
more later..
Hans.

Yo have my Number :D

Yo have my Number :D
Matt mate- not much good when you leave your mobile off... ;) (yep, just tried to call you- joke or not- I was not about to miss a chance to talk about mah new baby!:D) might give you a call tomorrow once I try to get it started again and the sun comes up. btw- It has no blower for the heater- there is a sort of plate where it should be- and what looks to be patched up holes for the coolant plumbing. Will talk to you tomorrow about it. and- before I have even tried to figure it out- if these numbers mean anything in particular to anyone I just got this of the plate in the engine bay (AND FOR SOME REASON I CANNOT GET THESE NUMBERS TO START ON A NEW LINE - SO '(*)' MEANS A NEW LINE) BJ42RV-KCQ (*) 3B 3431 (*) BJ42-003477 (*) 532 FD41 (*) H41 KO82 (*) A11 2340KG
