??? So I had my HEI apart last weekend, (it was a bad weekend...) and I noticed the little center tang on the rotor was all gnarled up :-[ So, does one have to put a small dab of moly grease on the center post coming from the coil in order to keep things from getting hot and melting?? I'd never seen this particular kind of failure before. Ideas or experiences welcome.

What's gnarled up? A fine technical term, even well spelled, but not so discriptive in this case. Bent? burnt? melted? discolored happens, but the other stuff ain't good

Yeah, I guess descriptions aren't my strong suit..

The center tang is all bent and looks like it was welded..... :-*
Frankly, I'm amazed the motor was still running, but it wasn't real smooth! Last nite I checked the rest of the distributor out, and it appears to be in good working order. The replacement rotor looks fine after running for a week. I just don't want this problem to repeat itself..

This can happen if you left the gm gear on rather than transferring the Toyota gear to the GM ditributor. Or if you did transfer gear it could be that the gear want relocated to low or to high on the shaft.

Happened to me. I screwed up the elevation of the gear.
