I have my heater in pieces now rebuilding and painting it. The heater core was 3/4 stopped up (wonder I was getting any heat at all). was thinking about the easiest way to put in a pre filter. Maybe cutting a slot in the duct and sliding in a cut window unit filter maybe. Anyone installed one? Need some Ideas.

You might consider a piece of fine mesh screen right on top of the core. I have some in stainless if you want me to send you a piece. It is industrial stuff for sifting flour, I think. At any rate it is not window screen. Freebie;)

I was thinking of somthing you could take out and clean without removing everything.

I understand, but there is also dirt from the cab that gets in the core, like pet hair. Seems like the closer to the core, the better off you will be. That way you should be able to remove and clean the screen without having to totally remove and disassemble the heater.

really... how long had it been in there... I dont think it is a big deal to take it out once every 30 years..... if you are really worried take it out every time you flush your coolant...

Specter has a gano filter,I have run them for years ,they work. They have one for the upper radiator hose and one for the heater. Mike

I run the Gano between my thermostat and the radiator. It works great. Not sure about the heater version.

Get two pieces of filter foam. Insert one piece at the inlet to the heater. Basically between the truck body and the inlet to the blower housing. This will catch all the larger dirt from outside.

Next, remove the in cab screen, cut a piece of foam for that, and put the screen back on over it. This will trap dirt from inside the cab.

If you want to trap smaller particles (smoke for example), install a negative ion generator inside the duct and put the filter on top of the heater coil. The charged air will cause the small particles to be deposited inside the duct and on the filter media. You will need to clean this filter more frequently as the ion generator really works.

For keeping the heater core clear on the inside, use the gano filter. I have one installed just have not run it yet...
