Header or Stock Manifold?

Doing some work on the drivers side engine compartment.......

Took out my trusty screw driver and sraped some dirt dopper nests off the exhaust manifold..........

Is that a crack? Screwdriver hangs on it....Get out wrench.

By the time said exhaust manifold comes off...... it's in 2 pieces.:doh::doh:

Enter Problem #2

This "crack" had formed back closer to where the intake and exhaust manifolds mate together and someone....(Dad's "Buddy" that I'm growing less fond of as this goes on) back in 1988ish must have felt this leak and cranked down the 2 bolts on the front that hold the manifolds together and did a nice job of stripping the threads in the intake manifold.

So now I've got a 2 piece exhaust manifold which is not factory and an intake manifold that has some bolt holes stripped out.... probably beyond repair.

Engine will remain stock.

The Questions:

Do I run a header? Or Get a new stock intake/exhaust manifold from somewhere?

Power increases, etc. while nice are not really an issue. Not sure there would be much of a gain from simply installing headers and nothing else anyway........

Run the header. Since you are in the South you probably won't miss the quicker warm-ups that the stock exhaust will give. Plus the heat riser valve was probably stuck long ago anyway. Check the bottom of the intake for cracks!

The intake being aluminum can be easily re-tapped but if you go to a header you won't have to anyway.

The header will require a bit of exhaust work to mate to the rest of your exhaust.

Power gains with just the header and no other mods will be minimal.
 
If you ever have the desire to run a factory PTO on it, you'll wish you had kept the stock exhaust manifold... ask me how I know. :o
 
I have a hard time buying into any opinion to use a stock exhaust manifold
(a) the milage gain and performance gain with a header are more significant on your Landcruiser than they would be on a small block chevy, or any other engine with full flowing exhaust manifolds.
(b) most exhaust manifolds are not designed to stuff 6 ports of exhaust into a single dump, bless Toyotas wisdom.
(c) most exhaust manifolds do not voluntarily crack into 2 pieces for no reason at all.
(d) good luck finding a used manifold that didn't crack during removal from it's previous engine.
(e) good luck tightening a used manifold onto your cylinder head without it cracking during the install.

And finally, anyone who wants to know how to install a Header onto a Landcruiser 6 cyl. without it leaking like a bitch, give me a call !!!!!
 
I've run both, I vote the stock manifold, less heat and much less noise, I have not found that much in power gains by using just a header as the only improvement, but they do require more maintiance, cheers, Larry
 
I just ran into the same problem. A quick search showed the stock manifolds to be too expensive so I ordered one of Man A Fre's $150 6 into 1 headers. My only advice would be to also order the other exhaust / intake manifold gasket because the asbestos one the header comes with is junk. The install was pretty easy; just don't hit the back of your alternator and short out your electrical system (disconnect your battery).

Indeed! And why not post up a primer on how to seal a header for us all as well!
 
To seal a header, you use 2 factory intake/exhaust gaskets and large diameter washers, then lock washers. No leaky. Check the torque a few times later.
 
The Toyota manifold is:
(a) Cheap and easy to come by in good used shape.
(b) Not prone to leaking as long as it is not warped. If it is warped, it can be machined for less money than a header.
(c) Works well with other Toyota options and accessories.
(d) runs cooler under the hood.
(e) runs quieter.
(f) lasts longer
(g) performance equivalent to a header.
(h) does not require modification of the rest of the exhaust system.
(i) better cold temperature performance

Let's see: Toyota cast iron is a win, win, win win, win, win, win, win, win situation.

If you run an aftermarket header, use the two piece style. It's much less likely to crack than the six-into-one header that's available. I know this because I had a six-into-one header when I bought my LC and it developed a good size crack.

Well the poll posted above has the stock manifold leading headers by 1 vote... (after my vote for headers :lol:)

I hope you counted me as pro-manifold, cause that's where I stand!
