The problem with starting an engine with a blown HG is the chance that there might be enough coolant in the pan to get sucked into the lubrication system and ruin your bearings.

I've posted this before and I'll post it again. Just change out the bearings! Change out both the rod and mains, clean everything up good and make sure the passages through the crank are clear. If there is some evidence of scoring on the crank use some 600 grit paper wet with alcohol and lap the surface.

To remove the mains, loosen all of the caps so the crank rests slightly lower. Then remove the caps one at a time and roll out the top bearing and roll in the new one with lube on it. Once all 7 have been replaced torque to spec and move onto the rods.

This will work just fine unless you have severe scoring on the crank. I did just this to a friend's engine 8 years ago and it is still running fine and quiet. And there was visible scoring on the crank when it went back together.

The job is your time and the clevites which are around $100.00. You already have done the worst part of the job and removed the oil pans, what do you got to loose?

Unfortunately, this does not address the low compression on cyl. #1. Maybe @slow95z would supply him with a full running engine.

Sometimes you have to get out of your head, it can just get in the way sometimes. I'd put the bearings in, it's only 100.00.
 
I have a sneaking suspicion that it's something directly related to the lack of oil pressure. But why would it start with good oil pressure and within about 10 minutes drop to zero?

The oil viscosity is falling as it heats up, pressure that low is a bearing problem. Pumps don't fail overnight. If you have lost a substantial amount of bearing, perhaps due to a bent rod then oil pressure will not be maintained for more than a few minutes.
