My 1HD-T powered 1994 HDJ81 made a belt slapping/snapping like noise, on an on-ramp, this morning. Lost power. My belts all look perfect. Truck turns over, but won't run.

Anyone want to hazard some guesses, before I start tearing it apart? I'm praying it isn't the timing belt, which was replaced 50K KM ago.

Its probably the timing belt, pull the plastic cover off, it will be very easy to see.

Nope, like 4 screws and the clips holding it on, its a little tight with the fan.

It's an interference motor...cross your fingers it's something else.

So did the tensioner bolt come out, or did something break? Who did the timing belt job for you? I wonder if they torqued the tensioner bolt properly (or at all). There is a chance your engine might be ok. If the cam pulley skipped one tooth, it will kill power, but may not lead to valve/piston interference. Might need to pull the cylinder head to know for sure. Why is the timing cover gasket sitting where it is? Did that only happen when you removed the cover?

Yikes...it sucked the rubber cover seal in....man you might be super lucky if there was enough tension to let the injection pump pulley slip but not the camshaft....you need to clean it all up and see if the timing marks are even close to aligned. If the camshaft pulley is a tooth or so off you might not have to pull the head. If you are over your head at all at this point I would take it into a shop.

The job was done by a trustworthy Toyota mechanic, with parts I sourced from @Radd Cruisers. Pulling the head is the next step.

Yeah. Checking the marks is a really good idea!

Keep in mind, the injection pump is gear driven, so it won't be out. Only the cam pulley will be out relative to the injection pump/ crank pulley. Checking how many teeth out is a great idea.

Did you check if the tensioner bearing siezed? I find it strange there are rubber marks right across the whole tensioner roller.

That sucks! Brought to its knees for the want of a sub $100 part!

Fingers crossed the top end is not too messed up.

That t belt looks chowdered!

If the pulley bearing is siezed, that's the source of the failure.
Looks like the belt has gotten hot rubbing on the seized pulley and started breaking down. I don't remember any of mine having so much texture on the toothed side.

Good luck repairing it,

Tensioner was original I assume? That really sucks, hoping for the best.

Crap man.....makes me want to go replace my timing components RIGHT NOW and they're only 30k into life

I also had an issue where the bolts holding the water pump housing backed out, causing a coolant leak. Tightened those up last week. Pump, belt, et al were done at the same time.

Oh no...it might be time to have that mechanic's torque wrench calibrated? That's not a coincidence.
