Pic 1: The bolt

Pics 2 & 3: How it should NOT(?) be done. Do NOT use your hand to hold the bolt/nut up behind the panel as I did. I had to get a socket wrench(?) for the allen(sp) bolt after I lost two allen wrenches in the body panel. :crybaby:

Here is what I meant by "not quite":

Pic 1: Where the seatbelt goes into the panel (2nd row)

Pics 2 & 3: Of the front seat

Might not be very clear, but there's a little space for the belt/strap to move through in the front seat panel, but it's not there (naturally) for the 2nd-row. Or maybe that's just the way they are even in the rigs with 3-point seatbelts in the first place.

The "hole" actually gets covered up nicely once the belt is properly installed. :hillbilly:

Impression:
I've had them in there for almost a week and I have felt pretty good about what I have done.

They catch whenever they are yanked or whenever I'm decelerating quickly. The kids like them and most importantly, I feel (much) better about having the safer seatbelts there for them.

If you do not make the same mistakes I've made and have the proper equipment to do it, this mod shold not take longer than 1.5 to 2 hrs, max!

HTH's and I'm going to bed!

Anyway, when I told about my modification yesterday to someone who has purchased a similarly-equipped rig in/from Japan and he told me of his interest in the details I decided to post this mod.

 Thank you Mot! As always, a wonderful writeup with great pictures.

-Steve (I can do that, sure I can, maybe...)

Steve,

If I can do it, so can you!

At least you wouldn't have to cut or tear any fabric. :crybaby:

Now, git'er (sp:D ) done!!

Wayne,

You're most welcome!

Mot :)

Mot,
Thank you for the excellent explanation with pictures. Now that you have had some practice do you want to do mine? If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost for the goodies to do this upgrade? What would it cost for new parts? Also, where did you manage to find your parts and were they out of a cruiser? Thank you again!!

Bilbo,

Thanks for the compliment!

I would like to help you except I'm in Japan.;)
I got my (used) seatbelts out of a parts 80 on an auction (Yahoo Japan). You might try the infamous "cruiserparts" guys. I hear they're usually pretty good to deal with (I've had a positive experience myself).

The reason I got them used was because, you guessed it, they're were pricey. Initially I felt reluctant because it was a safety part(s), but upon receiving them and seeing that they stopped/retracted normally I went ahead and did it.

It's really too bad that I can't help you because/but it's pretty simple/easy really.

I usually have my kids ride back there in their child seat and booster seat. I feel much better abouve having them there now.

My next project is to pay attention to the space behind the 2nd-row seats now and install the 3rd-row seats and belts for them (Matching seats are already obtained: used). We'll see how that goes!

GOOD LUCK!

Mot

mot - great write-up/pics. have the same seat belt scenario in my LC (1990) so after reading your posts, am kind interested and challenged to do this mod as well.

however, I think the key to the mod is getting exactly the same LC80 seat belts. I may have a hard time sourcing these locally in our Phils junkyards as LCs here treated as something very special. So we seldom see junkyard parts for an LC.

Would other belts from other LC series fit? Most probably would need some customizaion, right? How about from other Japanese cars/SUVs. We have here quite a number of parts from pajeros/patrols/corollas, etc. But not in abundance are LC parts, especially the 80s.

anyway, thanks for giving us (meaning those with earliesy 81 with lapbelt seat only" an idea. on with the challenge.

Mot - what is the thread pitch/size of the bolt you used to mount the seat belt on the pillar?

How's the 3rd row seat retrofit progressing? Got pics?

Wow - thanks for that fantastic write-up! I didn't even want to think about tackling that mod before, just figured I would have to have it done someplace..

Cheers :grinpimp:

podiev,

I can't recall the size of the bolt. I'll try posting if I don't forget to check.:hillbilly:

My rig is up for inspection/registration in two months.
I can get it done a month or so early so I'm going to wait until I get it taken care of before trying to toss the 3rd-row seats in. That way I have not worry about taking them out, etc... to get it inspected/registered.:D

Dan,

It REALLY is NOT that hard of a job.
I consider myself a 1/4  man and if I could do it, ANYBODY CAN!!

Mot:)

Nice Job Mot San.

You could use a new sub woofer;). Wish would have know that, would have given you mine.

Tossed it away about 1 month ago.

Cheers,

I just wanted to say thanks for doing such an excellent job documenting this procedure! I was looking for an answer to this very question, and couldn't have hoped for a more thorough explanation, and pics to boot!
