Another pic of the hood in the sun, man I am soooo happy with this color!

We had hoped to get some paint down today but it just didn’t happen with all the prep needed for assembly and such. Little more tomorrow and we can start in on the final paint.

I need that hood!

What's the process to do two-tone? Spray lighter base, let that cure, tape, spray darker base, then clear over everything?

Yes more or less. First thing, I am following Chris’s lead here. He is my #1 guy who has a four year degree in auto restoration. Could go either lighter or darker as a base on the whole Cruiser/cab, it doesn’t matter that much. We decided lighter which is the Sahara Frost color. Also rather than much more detail with say base/clear everywhere and or in the jams ect, we went with an easier method. That being the Sahara Frost mixed up in a single stage for back side of panels, inside, underside of hood, on top of seam sealer under the body and so forth. Made it easier to apply in areas that don’t matter so much. We did do jams in base/clear though for that really nice look when doors are open. Few other areas as well we have decided to go base/clear vs single stage due to desired finish and or easier.

Also we are trying to do things within flash times on the various coatings which vary. The seam sealer we use for example is 72hrs while 2k epoxy primer is 24hrs although you can go on the epoxy in about 30 mins so your flash time is 1/2 hour to 24hrs.

Exterior wise on this build is the most important, so once we had the sheet metal work done it was body filler over 2k epoxy primer. From what I have seen old school doesn’t mind putting body filler on top of bare metal. We don’t do that in my shop, we follow the belief of 2k epoxy on bare metal before body filler for a varied reasons I don’t want to get into.

Any ways after body work/filler we put down more 2k epoxy, extra thick. Most body shops will use a polyurethane primer here because it is way softer for sanding and goes down thicker for filling. It’s not as durable though as 2k epoxy. Once we were done with that we wet sanded to 400g on the 2k epoxy. After that we sprayed a sealer which you could use a 2k epoxy here thinned down but we did not. All these products by the way are getting hardener, accelerate and thinner as needed. After sealer we have sanded to 600g before laying down base color and then clear coat to finish.

We can tape off for the two tone and the accent line during flash times which is our plan. Nice and thick clear coat on top of it all to finish it out.

All up it’s looking like over six gallons of products on the cab/body from start to finish not counting body filler or any sound deadening!!

Cheers

Awesome, thanks, I appreciate the in depth response. Planning out my own paint job for spring of next year

Such quality and workmanship; everything you/your team does is top notch. I’m excited to see where you take this, through the build process, but also where you take it wheeling…gonna take big cojones to get scars on this beauty!

Dang!! Some things in life you want to see in person, one of them is this project!! Good job!!

Alrighty! We pulled a 12hr day today to get this done and painted. Longer actually, as when all said and done it will be a 15hr or so day for me. Chris however pulled a 12 and Charles who is coming down in an hour to help me push it out of this booth pulled an 11 or so hour day! So big UPs to both of them!

Black Gold on the accent stripe really didn’t pop until clear went down.
