Hi Lo2aY,
I'm new of this very interesting forum, and very happy italian owner of '97 HDJ 80 24v.

I take this opportunity to ask you a question. I recently mounted the barn doors. Using the car almost exclusively in Africa for holidays, after many years I decided to make this change, finding it far more useful for my needs (mine is like a "camper" '80 ).But now I find myself in difficulty to find the original wheel carrier, in Italy but also in Europe, like what I see in your pictures, and specific for the barn doors (and other than the one for the tail gate). Could you kindly direct me to a serious dealer where I can buy a used, or new, one, but complete in all its parts? I would be really grateful, and thank you in advance!
Francesco

Heck, if shipping wasn't an issue, I would mail you mine. I pulled the original tire carrier when I painted mine.

To the OP, I'm jealous you seem to have access to good parts. I own a 97 HZJ80 here in Uganda and parts are scarce. I for sure wouldn't ever find a rear lift gate.

the main difference clutch wise it's your 1HZ have a 275mm clutch vs 300mm clutch in HD engine .. so you can keep your 275mm clutch or swap for the 300mm one .. or do a hybrid like I did in Marilu .. ( take a look on my sign )

Interesting! I saw your build threads! very nice truck and I loved the videos. I can't remember for sure, but didn't you use an Isuzu clutch in yours? are they the same size? curious to know why you want that route.

Subscribed….and looking forward to a lot of pics on the tail gate swap, as well as the 1HDT swap.

Thanks Hamza! I'm spending a lot of time on the cruiser, my Jeeps are very upset lol.

Hello Francesco,

the tire carrier (wheel carrier) uses reinforcement plates inside the body on the passenger side of the vehicle. If you have the factory ladder on yours, then swapping to a tire carrier is very easy. I had the wheel carrier and moved to the ladder system. It just makes more sense to me to mount my accessories to the bumper.

Here is the Toyota website in Saudi Arabia. It's operated by ALJ, one of the biggest Toyota Dealers in the world.

http://www.toyota.com.sa/en/

I did look into keeping/replacing my stock tire carrier with a new one. The price was extremely high for what it is and it's discontinued from Toyota. At least thats what the counter guy told me. Drop them an E-mail and check for yourself. ALJ is a Toyota dealer in Germany as well.

We do have a lot of 80s here. The problem is finding good clean usable parts. Most of the parts I want to replace are usually better than what I find at junk yards. But then again, this is only in the capital city. other cities should have a good stock of parts and probably cheaper than Riyadh.

I did indeed .. that was my solution to have 300 mm clutch ( disc and Pplate ) while keeping my H150F 21 fine spline input ..

Thanks!

This thread is due for an update.

Got the cruiser back from the body shop. Had the replace the barn doors to lift gate style. The white lift gate I bought turned out to be the biggest mistake I did. It was wrapped and f***ed up pretty badly.

IMAG1277_zps21f1ef25.jpg

So the hunt began for a clean set. I found a cruiser that I just simply couldn't walk away from. Even with it having the wrong color. It was too good to just let go. The disassembly started. I left with the rear gate, a "like" new carpet and inner side panels, rear hook, rear factory swing out tire carrier and some speakers for what's equivalent to $800 USD. not bad!

IMAG1282_zpscf1abc63.jpg

And here she is back with the new lift-gate configuration. I didn't repaint the gate, because I plan to repaint the yota once I get all the mechanical issues out of the way.

Also got the new flares installed.

I have bumpers, lockers, lift kit, over size fuel tank and other things on a few pallets flying to me in two weeks.

If anyone wants any closeups of the rear gate swap, please let me know.

I like my barn doors over tailgate ..personal preference I guess.
Liking your build so far though.

This thread is due for an update!

Got a lot of stuff imported. me and two friends got 4.5 tons of goods shipped by air. It was great to see all of the parts at once. kinda overwhelming but amazing nonetheless. It's also cheaper to ship more stuff together by air then to ship them separate.

Here we are clearing customs at King Khalid International Airport.

IMAG1447_zps661fd886.jpg

Shortly after getting situated, the rear bumper was first on the list. I just couldn't stand the frame sticking out with no protection.

IMAG1472_zpsb5d358d4.jpg

Fitting the bumper was a major PITA. mainly due to the exhaust being always in the way. the Exhaust was damaged when it was with the PO. it was not repaired properly. So had to spend sometime getting the rear brackets back into shape to clear the bumper. but then the holes wouldn't line up. some elbow grease did the job.

Here we are on the same day rocking dual tire carriers on Toyota steelies AKA Saudi cents :flipoff2:

IMAG1476_zpsb7f7174e.jpg

The next day I got to the front bumper/12KM winch

IMAG1483_zps1867e4d5.jpg

IMAG1502_zps78877448.jpg

The front suspension is really tired. The minute the front bumper/ winch were installed, the 80 was riding on the bump stops. :hmm:

IMAG1503_zpsb6cd5fa9.jpg

So a suspension upgrade is due. Here we have the old vs new. Fox 2.0s and 285s

Boom! new ride height. still need to get the castor fixed. :smokin:

IMAG1538_zps8758b3e0.jpg

Here is the front-end again. Those bumpers should be shipped with the 80 from the assembly plant. Not the flimsy ones that came with them.

The steering box is leaking. That needs to get addressed asap! for the second time.

IMAG1539_zpsae0d651f.jpg

the cruiser needed new tie rod ends badly. So I took the time to go through them and throw a new OME SS while i'm at it.

IMAG1540_zps8cbe66a1.jpg

Here is my supervisor/trail buddy making sure everything is done properly.

my one and only sticker on the cruiser right now

So what's next?

Well, I need to get the motor either fixed or replaced with a Turbo 1HD

Caster and CA bushings.
Swaybar link bushings replaced.
Swap the rear axle for one with discs
install lockers

That's all the drive-line stuff that need attention.

Wow, looking awesome! Great work! Like the dual carrier too

Looking good MSA Loay…re swapping out the rear axles for one with disc brakes, you need to make sure your parking brake will work. It may not work unless you get the transfer case brake system.

You going to run wider tires now that you have the flares on?

How's that 1HDT search coming along?

Thanks Hamza! It's pure joy seeing it coming together. Thanks for the inspiration. I will always owe you that for getting me back in the cruisers lol.

As for the rear axle, I don't think the T-case has anything to do with the E-brake. I could be wrong I honestly didn't look. I have the split case. I believe yours does too. I think all I need is the axle, brakes, E-brake cables and possibly modify the brake booster for the rear brakes. I still have to look into it. I read a few people on mud doing the same mod. Hopefully the one I find has the same gearing? I don't know if they came in different gear sets (as dealer options).

Tires wise, I'm digging the skinnies. I know, it doesn't look right with the wide flares. But for some really weird reason, I like the skinnies on with the flares. It helps keep all the offers off the truck :grinpimp:

The motor route is a problem. Mainly with me. I keep going back and forth with the idea of going with a 1HD-TF or 1HZ.

Here's my logic,

the good in our environment

1HZ

Very reliable.
Parts are easy to source.
Easy to fix.
my 80 came with this motor.

1HD-FT

Reliable if left stock and installed properly.
Powerful motor. Specially the one I drove, OMG! it made my 1HZ pathetic.

The bad

1HZ

Slower than a saudi contractor (no pun intended :D)
Adding weight (bumpers/ tire carrier/gear/waiting to be installed slider) only makes it heavier. I understand why you kept yours "stockish" for the most part. It makes sense for this powerplant.

1HD-FT

Finding the motor in a good/ clean condition.
Expensive to purchase and maintain.

I could have mine fixed and ready to go in 3 weeks. This truck will mostly see gravel roads and minor sand dune driving. But you never know, I could have to deal with a big sand dune area to get somewhere. It happened before and it will probably happen again.

My sliders will not fit on the passenger side due to the factory exhaust bracket on the frame. anyone reroute the exhaust/ modify the bracket that holds it up?

More after I come back from the US

I haven't posted an update in a while.

So I took care of the steering. replaced it with a new steering box.

Drove the 80 for a few tens of thousands of kilometers and life was good. The motor was driving me nuts but I just couldn't find any motivation to fix/ deal with it.

Then one of my friends calls and tells me there's a 1HD-FT motor for sale in a Junk yard!!!! I couldn't believe it. These motors were never offered for the GCC. I don't know how this motor landed here but I had to get it. It has just shy of 300KMs. I took the motor/Engine harness/Engine bay harness. Dash harness. Took the trans and rear disc brake axle. Took the side view mirrors. and you might ask why? Well, the JDM 80s have a button to power fold the mirrors in which it will be perfect for side parking. I also picked up a full interior trim, a steering wheel cover, a factory winch that was NEVER used! and finally front and rear factory perfect seats. Honestly, If this was a LHD 80. I would have probably moved all my parts over to it and called it good. It was so clean! I felt really bad about pulling the parts out. But hopefully, this will turn out good.

To make you even more jealous. Everything you just read about the Junk yard find will have to be X2. Because I'm working on 2 vehicles. Actually, we bought another 80 series because there was another FT motor. I'm not kidding!! haha

So once the parts were secured. My cruiser headed to my shop and the tear down began.

As of right now. The interior is all out. I plan to pull the dash out as well and replace/repair all harnesses.

Deleting the rear AC.

Deleting the rear right passenger seat.

Deleting the fender flares.

Adding ARBs front and back.

Will pull the drive-train out next and send the cruiser to the paint shop.

At that moment, I'll start refreshing the 1HD-FT inside and out. Inspecting the motor and doing general maintenance.

It's funny how I was only dreaming of finding an FT. let alone drive back home with 2!

Great days ahead gents! can't wait to drive the cruiser with the new heart!

Mashallah a great looking truck.

Very much looking forward to seeing more pics of the build.

Will the 1HDT mate with the current trans without having to change the input shaft?

What plans do you have for the 1HZ?

From what I gathered, there is no change in input/output splines. The biggest difference is the clutch/flywheel. These are different. What I understood is that the tranns behind the gassers use the same clutch/flywheel as the 1HD-FT since it has more torque. It kinda makes sense because this motor will make a lot more power over the HZ family.

I'm looking for an FJ43 to put the 1HZ in. Probably run a similar setup of what you have in it. Safari turbo/IC. But my 1HZ needs a rebuild before it goes in anything.

As we are cleaning all the used parts. I found a crack on the adapter plate between the Trans/T-case. Going to see if the dealer stocks it. Or possibly move the one from my HZJ setup to it. The donor drivetrain came with the Full-Time 4WD. Which I'm not really a fan of. So i'm going to swap the cases and hopefully that takes care of the cracks.

At this point, we pulled the oil pan to check the big end bearings and found to be good. I need the part number for the the bolts that hold the caps in place. Couldn't find them anywhere.

The head was pulled today and inspected. It looks like the previous owner took well care of the motor in general. There is carbon build up. But with 300K you would expect nothing less.

Yesterday I took the Factory turbo apart to clean it. That was a big mistake. I can't find an overhaul kit for it. I may have to put it back together and hopefully it lives for another 300K.

But i'm leaning towards getting an aftermarket turbo. That plus an IC and 3" exhaust should give me plenty of power. My only concern if I go this route is the fuel pump which will definitely need adjustments. But then I'm not so sure about our fuel quality here in Saudi. Ironically, we don't have the best fuel quality in the world. So would that be a major factor in tunning/ motor reliability? At this point i'm not really sure.

The dash harness from the HZJ80 should accept the 1HD-FT. But if I wanted to use a RHD harness in a LHD. How much of PITA is that? Has anyone tackled something similar?

Anyone have any experience with xxi? I'm looking at their fuel pumps and Turbo systems. Possibly the exhaust too!

Nice build. Love the KSA and UAE Cruisers.
Are you willing to sell the ambulance doors? :)
